Hi there
I'm after some advice regarding the best bed for a kennel. We have recently acquired two black labs from a family member due to ill health. It may be a permenant thing or he may be well enough to have them back but this wouldn't be for a few months yet. Anyway, we have built two kennels in our large double garage attached to the house, with galvanised railing panels. They are gun dogs used to being kennelled, so quite happy. However, we can't decide what to use as beds without breaking the bank. I think they will need somewhere they can get inside as although out the weather the garage does get fairly cold in the winter (we will bring them into the utility room in severe cold weather) and it would need to be raised off the concrete floor. Does anyone have websites etc where I could look please? The obvious choice would be a wooden kennel but these are so expensive?!
Many thanks

A pallet on the floor will work just as well, with their bed on it. You could also put a pallet acrosos the front to make a draught break. Our dogs always had straw as their bedding, they used to make lovely warm nests, but that is probably outdated now. They are spoiled now and live indoors so I can't tell you what people use now.
When my bitch was in quarantine (years ago) she had lots of old towels that were changed daily for drying.

a plastic dog bed (and in fact a pallet roof with a sheet over it makes an excellent cosy nest!) with an old duvet or some vet bed would then be fine as a bed

Thank you yes hadn't thought about pallets. They really need a 'nest' and I had thought about duvets although one of them is a terrible chewer so may be a mess!!

A plastic dog bed or wooden box filled with shredded paper is good. Putting a lid over it helps with keeping warm. A table over the top is as good as most alternatives and useful in a garage.

I would only do any of the above if you are absolutely 100% sure the dogs aren’t chewers and with a change in circumstances, even if they haven’t been before, it will be a high risk time for them starting.

I only have benches like these in my kennels with vet bed on.

that is also the only option Ive found which doesnt end up with a damp bed through condensation, the plastic beds were awful for this.

Thank you yes I like the dog benches and the shredded paper although we use vet bed which keeps dry. I'm wondering if there's a solution with a roof? I'm just thinking that the air gets cold and they would be better with something over them. We have got crates, maybe they would be just as well with a blanket over the top? Thanks for the thoughts
