Whist I know reputable breeders are not nescessarily huge fans of the KC - how many reputable breeders don't KC reg their puppies?
I would have thought most do?
Perpared to be corrected tho - and I do know that working dog breeders don't always KC reg theirs - but they do breed for good reasons and to get the best working dog possible -so that in itself is a good thing..
Of course some breeds like JRTs are not recognised by the KC (parson's are - but is not same) - so wouldn't apply for them...
Form my own point of view - I want the healthiest dog with the best temprament that it is possible to get, and for me that includes buying a KC reg puppy - cos what else do I have to go on? But it doesn't stop there - I also want a good breeder - not just a KC reg puppy.
Don't know about your KC, but SKK here in Sweden really isn't that expensive compared to the rest of the costs with a litter and just owning the bitch.
Besides the health checks (a general one or more specific, depending on the breed) that obviously any responsible breeder should do regardless of the puppies should be reg. or not, if the dog and bitch have been shown on a official Dog Show after 6 months of age, getting 1 or 2 "grade" in quality, then each puppy costs 355 SEK = today 30,35 GBP, to reg.
If the dog and bitch haven't been shown, the male dog needs a vet. paper that confirms he has two testicles where they should be and each puppy costs 515 SEK = today 44,13 GBP, to reg.
Although it is money and of course it needs to be payed, but again looking at what they puppies costs in feeding, cleaning up after accidents, toys, gnaw bones, costs of the bitch, paying the stud dog owner etc, then compared to what each puppy costs, that extra 355 or 515 SEK extra doesn't make much difference.
In Sweden, please trust me, there is no breeder that tells you that you get the pup 500 SEK cheaper if they don't have to reg it and that being the true reason. You can get it cheaper because they haven't done certain health checks, because "Oops was the stud dog not reg?" or some other reasons, but breeders NEVER decides to not reg to save the puppy buyer any money. To save themselves some money yes, but not the puppy buyer.
I'm sure that if they sell an not reg. puppy for 500 SEK less, they still get what they intended to get, they just want to make you think you got it cheaper.
