My friend thinks (and from what she says I agree) that her sister's border terrier has kennel cough (dry, hacking cough, almost like choking). She has checked his throat and mouth and there is nothing in there.

So, a couple of questions.....

Should her sister take the dog to the vet? I was under the impression that usually the vet will not do anything unless the cough has persisted for a long time - but I am not sure if that is true. She is more than happy to take the dog to the vet.

Is there anything over the counter that she can give to ease the cough?

Any help gratefully received!

my puppy is just getting over kennel cough, which he had when I purchased him at 8 weeks old, he did go to vet and was prescribed antibiotics for 2 weeks, so yes its definatly worth getting it checked my your vet

Yes get it checked by a vet! My Lab caught it after being in kennels for a week, she was in a bit of a state and could hardly breathe, so we got her checked and the vet told us that it is highly contaigious and even worse, can kill a dog if left untreated, although this is rare. It will only get worse if she doesn`t get antibiotics soon.

we never leave kennel cough untreatred - part of it is viral, but is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella which will respond to antibiotics so we always prescribe these.

Ok, that's great info, I will tell her to book a vets appointment. Another friends dog had it a year or so ago, and the vet then said that they don't treat, which I thought a bit strange at the time.

Thanks for the help!

would the dog also have a bit of a snotty sound while sniffing the floor with kennal cough? my dog has been coughing a bit the last two days , only when excited, and have also noticed a phlem (sp) type noise when snuffling around the floor......
