My dogs are not, and never have been, vaccinated for Kennel Cough.
But a new shoot that I pick up on is offering a discount day for all dogs before the start of the season.
It seems i may as well take them up on it. But would you do all of them, including a retiree who won’t be going? Are there any risks to older dogs with having it?

The only one of mine I have done is the oldie. He had kc badly when he was younger (despite being vaccinated) and a couple of time since and has been more sick than the other dogs. I know like the flu jab for us it only covers certain strains but as I go to shows quite a lot I prefer to give him some protection. He has never had any ill effects from the jab itself.

I only do my dogs who need to be able to go into kennels/are around large numbers of dogs so my 16yo won't be done and 10yo likely won't be next year.
Do you worry if your youngsters bring it home? I can’t decide what do for the best.
It makes sense for the workers as they are travelling in a trailer with about 20 dogs all told.

I do it as I kennel my dogs when I go away, never had any ill effects, I did worry about the 13 year old but equally Kennel Cough wouldn't be good either and you'd be the worst in the world if you brought it to an event/trial/show etc. Mine have had it two or three times after coming out of kennels, apparently it's daycare people who are the problem!!

As mine have never been kennelled I haven’t had to, and when I was on smaller shoots they didn’t travel in such large groups. But now it is a worry and as the discount day is in August it gives them time to get over it before they work.
I think I’ll do them all, Tawny too. I can’t imagine coughing endlessly would be nice when you’ve got a dodgy neck. Thanks all.

You ideally need to do everyone or not at all, the vaccine is live so the one at home is at risk of getting it from the vaccinated if you don’t vaccinate.
I don’t do my own, they get natural immunity..!
Natural immunity never seemed to work for our now oldie . He first caught it when he went to work with daughter at a busy town practice, and got it again a few months later ! He also got GE within a couple of weeks of being there, just liked to test her I think 🙄

Years ago, back when I was living at home, mum had her shih tzu puppy vaccinated against kennel cough.

Said puppy then proceeded to give my elderly bitch kennel cough.

It would seem the live strain within the vaccine is enough to make them somewhat infectious.

Yes I’m going to get my old girl done at the same time.

Interestingly, I was chatting today to a neighbour who has a properly assessed therapy dog 🙃, and to take the dog into care homes the dog must NOT be vaccinated against kennel cough. Being a live vaccine, there are apparently rare cases of transmission to vulnerable individuals.

This isn’t PAT dogs uk, it’s apparently better regulated and stricter than that, though I’m beggared if I can recall the name of the organisation. The dog has certainly had a number of very thorough assessments before being approved to work, and only after proving her worth in the care home will she be allowed into the local primary school for one closely supervised hour a week.

Usually the dog has to have 14 days off therapy visits after a KC vaccine, including visiting anyone going through chemo or RT. Then after that they are usually permitted to restart visits unless they came out with symptoms in which case nothing to restart till 14 days after the last symptom has finished.
We had to delay D getting hers due to me being of compromised health earlier in the year and even then my husband took her in so I was absent from the application.

Not all KC vaccines are live. Nobivac Respira BB (injectable, not intranasal) is inactivated and specifically designed for immune compromised owners/handlers and dogs which have high social exposure like doggy day care etc

That is a thing, does the standard one get squirted up the nose? That’ll be fun. I know the vet doing this bulk lot and sensitive he is not. Ffee has calmed down so much at the vets after much good work from the team I suspect this will be a huge step back.

Ask for the oral version for her. One of mine had a nasty experience with a nervous vet and now goes into panic mode with the nasal one but she's totally fine with the oral version.

It comes in 10 dose bottles so will depend on your practice. I have it in stock all the time as I have a lot of boarding kennel clients

I have never had mine vaccinated for this. My vet always says it is a bit hit and miss and the kennels I go to doesn't insist on it as dogs don't mix at all outside of their own family/kennel mates. Mine have all caught it over the years and have all been ok. My daughters dog was vaccinated and has had it badly. It is not something I worry about too much as I know all of mine have caught it locally, probably on the common out front where lots of dogs get walked. They do however, have all their other routine vaccinations.

So today is the day. But Ffee has got bad diarrhoea. She’s had it for 2 days/nights now. I am thinking a vaccine probably a bad idea?
Which leads to if I don’t do her I shouldn’t do the others?
Which leads to if I do them we are going (no dogs) to a hunt kennels tomorrow, is there any chance we’ll have infectious clothes?
And if I could have an opinion ASAP as I need to cancel if I’m not going. 😁

I wouldn't vaccinate while poorly and given the live strain, I would also not do the others.

I would have no concerns with infectious clothes, having done them or not. It wouldn't even have crossed my mind tbh.
