I've had an application provisionally accepted for a dog that is in rescue. He is currently in a foster home but came down with kennel cough about a week ago. I'm supposed to go and visit him and take my own little dog to see how they get on - but I'm worried about the kennel cough. How long is it contagious for? I know its not usually fatal and my dog is young and healthy, but my dog spends the day with my parents when I'm at work and they have an elderly collie and I really dont want her catching anything.
Should I go and visit the new dog this weekend as suggested or wait.

Years ago I had a dog but we wanted another, so we trundled off in the car off to the local rescue, we left Charlie in the car, didn't take him in at all, we went and had a look around, but came out without a dog, the following week Charlie came down with Kennel cough, its soo contagious and easy to catch, I would be worried for your parents collie, imo I would most deffinately wait, or even get your dog vaccinated and go in a fortnight or however long it is for the vaccination to take effect

Good luck with getting your new dog tho .. we shall be expecting pics :D

I would wait too, it is very contagious :( For what its worth both my Vets don't really rate the vaccination, it won't do any harm, but you'd be better keeping your pennies.

Thanks for the advice. I rang my vets who said Kennel Cough can still be contagious several months after the initial symptoms, depending on the strain. Regretfully I cant take the risk with my parents collie dog so have had to pass on the rescue dog. There were other people in the queue wanting him so I'm sure he'll have a lovely home. He sounded so perfect for us though - such a shame.

sensible decision, a great shame nonetheless. Good on you though.
