Took dog to the vets had been coughing a few days, told it was kennel cough said shes probably had it around 10 days. i have to keep her isloated for 3 weeks, vet said i could walk her as long as she didnt cough over another dog. shes on tablets for 1 week, paid and went home. and vet was quite rude

Mum took her dog to vets just to make sure hers didnt have it, her vet said... its stressed related not to exercise them unless you can keep them calm. only to feed soft food, and gave hers anitbotics and tablets.

whats the truth about kennel cough...

Highly contagious - keep it isolated, and don't wear the same clothes fussing with your dog and then go to another.

It's a canine version of strangles (as in highly contagious!) Please be very careful and don't go near other dogs, particularly puppies or bitches with pups, it could be lethal to them! If there are dogs on your yard you really need to change your clothes if going from home to yard and so on; it really isn't to be treated lightly (not that I am saying you are of course, just stressing how serious it can be)

thanks, luckily dogs arent allowed on the yard, only the gaurd dogs and i havent touched them since i found out... i dont think i touched them before i found out either.

i need to go to my agility group tomorrow to tell them as i havent got a phone number. im worried i could give to to one of their dogs.

The virus can live in there slobber/snot for upto 24hrs if not longer so you must change clothes. Again NO exercise as you can end up blowing there lungs. Also a dog will have it for around 3 wks before showing the symptoms of it. There are so many strains of it so hard to prevent getting it although there is a nasal spray for them but then they become carriers so any dog not sprayed can come down with. Try not to worry to much they do recover quite easily from it. Any questions just PM me

Did your vet actually do a swab test to determine if the dog is actally carrying the Kennel Cough bacteria? (bordatella something or other)

We had our GSP suffering with a cough and isolated her. Vets kept telling us to give antibiotics. She was still coughing 3 weeks later and eventually found by xray to have a shadow on her lung (mild pneamonia) and no trace of the KC causing bacteria.

Next time one of ours cough we will make sure they have a throat swab taken first!!
