hi
my lovely old dog (12) has got kennel cough
he started showing signs two weeks ago , he has been to the vet and has also had 10 days antibiotics as he also had a temp
he is recovering slowly and is starting to eat a little better but he is still coughing
the vet said he may cough for up to 6 weeks

obviously he is kept at home and is only going out into his own yard and back again
i was wondering how long he will be contagious for ?
obviously as long as he is still coughing he'll be kept in i know that much but what about after he stops coughing ?

my friend is getting a new puppy next week and i'm terrified he catches it from me (obviously my dog will be staying at home atm) i can't avoid going as my horse is kept there but how likely is it that i could carry it on me ?
do i need to completely avoid the puppy ?

i have no idea how its carried etc and no idea how my poor dog caught it but he's been very sick and i don't want to pass it on :(

Used benylin and honey.

Vet told me 72hrs post coughing they are safe but leave it a week to be sure.

Its caused by a bacteria that is in the system anyway. But the virus causes it to over colonate which causes irritation to dog... Cough.

So when the dog is no longer coughing the body isnt fighting a infection anymore.

Hope your dogs gets over it soon. Its rife at the moment!

It's rife round here too. I have one coughing dog, suspect other 2 will follow. I am giving manuka honey, vitamin c and boots infant cough medicine and have seen a huge improvement in 24 hours . Just a word of warning, make sure you don't use cough medicine containing xylitol as it is toxic to dogs .

thank you both
my vet recomended benilyn tickly cough meds but hes got such a poor appetite it was putting him off his food even more :(
he's normally a picky eater but he wouldn't touch a thing for 3 days i really thought i was going to loose him , he was so weak he could hardly walk :(

he's getting much better now thank god and he's eating much better just needs to put a lot of weight back on as he's like a hat rack
is it worth now getting him vaccinated for it (obviously once he's completely recovered) or will he have some sort of imunity to it now , i'd hate for him to get it again :(
