Just got back from the out of hours vets. I thought Stanley had swallowed something and got it stuck in his throat but vet thinks it's probably kennel cough. He's pretty bright, is eating OK but from time to time starts to honk He's been given antibiotics and anti inflammatories and i'm to contact my own vet tomorrow. Poor Stanley! I've no idea where he might have picked it up, if that is what he has, as the incubation period is quite wide and tbh I have deliberately been walking him where we will meet other dogs. Fingers crossed he will get over it quickly.

My little dog had it, probably picked up from a Travelodge of all places!

My vet said he’d only prescribe something if she became unwell, which fortunately she didn’t. I believe they have an immunity to it once they’ve had it, so that’s a small positive.

I enquired of my vet, a couple of years ago, if there was any point to vaccinating against KC and her reply was that at best, it may be just a bit better than not bothering. The vaccine used is also 'live' and anyone on immune suppressing drugs (my OH) needs to remain out of contact with those dogs which have been vaccinated, or at least, initially.

If young Stanley is otherwise in good health, I'm sure that he'll make a full recovery. If indeed he does have KC then he will need to be kept away from other dogs, as I'm sure that you're aware. KC is highly contagious.

Alec.

Thanks Alec, he's a very healthy dog, good weight etc. I googled KCough when we got back home, so realise how contagious it is, so he's in isolation. I have to make a bit of an effort to meet other dogs any way, hence my regular trips to the town playing fields. He's quiet this morning, lying by the aga but with a waggy tail when he saw me, normally he'd launch himself across the kitchen so he is feeling off colour. We are supposed to be having my daughter's Vizla to stay again next weekend while they go to a concert. Our house is big enough to keep them apart but neither of them will be very happy as they both always want to be with us in the kitchen and the Viz whines incessantly if if can hear us but not see us. What to do?

there's lots of it about and has been for the last twelve months up here-both of mine are vaccinated (Bordatella) as there was an outbreak at a canicross event. natural and vaccinated immunity is relatively shortlived although the vaccine is now 12 months, natural immunity is 6-12 months. It can be miserable for them and if they are out and about I dont see any reason to not vaccinate them tbh.

We don't vaccinate for it, mind you after Tawny was really ill from her lepto last year she is not being vaccinated against anything now.
Oldie - it is like a rotten cold and makes them feel like we do when we are under the weather. It tends to only be serious in young pups or oldies, but if they get a secondary infection they can be poorly. I certainly would not have your daughters dog on any of the ground that Stan has been on for a week after Stan is all better, keeping them apart won't help much.

Thanks, I have a feeling that I will be going to South Wales to look after the Viz for the weekend!

I'm always baffled some boarding kennels insist on KC vaccs as I too thought they were ineffective and also there are many different strains out there?

I wouldn't have the viz to stay if yours has cough and to be honest I'd be surprised if your daughter will want to risk hers picking up cough.

Bung George in kennels, I think they'd rather put me in a home! He is the most adored, most perfect dog in the world, can do no wrong, lights up the world as he passes by because he is so handsome. I'll suggest it to them! And yes, we do spoil them.

Lol!!!

Quick update on Stanley. Despite a bit of a runny nose and the occasional honk, normally caused by excitement rather than exercise, he seems fine, just fractionally quieter than normal. He helped me do some gardening this morning, he was ace at taking stuff to the compost bins but didn't always agree on the best route. Not so good at collecting up fallen leaves, they were just too much fun but absolutely brilliant at digging (who would have thought it?). We had a quiet after lunch session on the sofa reading a good book, Stan was quite good at turning the pages but not always when I wanted them turned. Any way he seems OK and I am much relieved! pointless post really but I am rather besotted with him.

That is why people have dogs, proper companions. :-)

My whippet boy had KC earlier this year....my bitch never caught it which I thought was strange.......He was never given anything from the vet as he coped with it well. On another forum though I was advised that Dorwest garlic and fennugreek can help....I cannot recommend the stuff enough! I continue to give him it because of his allergies making him snuffly and congested at night...its the only thing that help....works wonders in comparison to the anti histamine.... I believe it is good for their joints etc too...
