Hi. I have a small cob-type pony (not quite as wide as a traditional cob, but low withered and flat backed). He is only able to take up to a 16.5" saddle which limits what cob saddles I can get.

Does anybody know if the K&M Pony GP might be suitable? I see it has S gullet bars and am thinking it's a flatter shape, is that right?

Do they do a cob compact? That would be perfect if so! They are shorter panels than a regular saddle.
Look on the K&M website and see if that's an option?
 
It's one of the few options they don't seem to do unfortunately - but I think you've thought of a definite good idea they're missing!!

Any dedicated Cob saddles I can see all start at 17"... Of course there are some Native Pony saddles but they are soooo expensive, even second hand they seem to start at about £700. I just need something that fits, is relatively comfy and will do us for Happy Hacking!
 
Hi - thanks. I've just actually been looking on there! But couldn't see anything under 17". Think I'll place a 'wanted' advert on it and see if there's any luck... Don't understand it?!
 
I posted a thread a while ago asking about saddles for short, flat backed cobs. Will try and find a link as was given some good advice.

We tried a K&M GP but gave up with GPs altogether in the end as they all just slipped up our girl's neck. Her shoulder just kept interfering and moving them around.

Following my thread we went for a lovely Black Country WH saddle. Fits our girl like a glove, 16" and soooo comfy. I think I paid about £400 for it second hand.

If it is a GP you want, I do actually have a nice 16" L.A.Jones saddle which is sitting around doing nothing. It is xxw so may be too wide but though I'd mention it. Do pm me if you would like details/pics :)

Have you looked at Solution Saddles? They are treeless / fully flexible so perfect on shorter backed horses and those with big shoulders as they dont restrict movement or get pushed around resulting in the saddle slipping. They also do a native range which cater for broader backed types. Definitely worth a test ride.

They are very much like traditional saddles to look at - infact unless you knew i dont think you'd guess ... the only one who would really know the difference is the horse ... most of which seem to move a lot better in a treeless.

Worth a look i think.
 
Thanks, I'll look at the Solution Saddles. Thank you also Clare85 - I'll read that thread (I never seem to find useful ones when I search the the forums!). Unfortunately I think that would be too wide but thanks anyway.
 
We had a fairly flat backed New Forest and a K&M cob gp (17") which was done up using the back 2 girth straps only. Fitted like a glove, never moved an inch and was very comfortable for both rider and pony, it was also adjusted to the seasons (he lived out so changed weight from summer to winter)
 
I have K+M 16.5" GP for my short-backed cob. I got it when she was rather fat with no withers to speak of and it fit really well with the widest gullets, girthed up on the back 2nd and 3rd straps (there are I think 4 girthing points so you can move the straps backward too). She has now changed shape completely with work and the saddle still fits my new skinny cob with withers, in a medium gullet! I got it 3 years ago now from Rideaway on sale and when I spoke to them they said you can get a pony saddle made with longer flaps if needed for the riders legs too. I'd say def one to consider for that type, I find it really comfy too!
 
That's really really interesting to know, thank you. Is your cob traditionally flat backed? So the K&M pony tree is flat enough (that's the Pony Club GP one?)? If you are able to pm a picture of saddle on pony I'd be hugely grateful. Thank you!

Please do post, I help run the group. There are plenty of smaller seat sizes that get advertised, but you could also post on the similar saddle fitting advice page/group (can't remember which). And do bear in mind that saddles vary hugely in their footprint, even on the same tree a different panel can mean up to 1.5" difference in footprint.
 
Do they do a K&M cob in a 16.5? I don't think they do, Thorowgood cob starts at 17" and know they're the same saddle? The pony thorowgood has very narrow panels as a girl at the yard tried one on her cob and wasn't a good fit
 
Have to say, I had a K&M saddle for my mare and it proved to be incredibly uncomfortable in the- ahem - crotch area! So much so that my husband couldn't come near me for weeks after a long hack 😁 I ended up trading it in. The pommel was quite high, think that was the problem.
