mine that bird has just gone from tailed off last to win the kentucky derby by 8 lengths time 2.02 you can watch it on nbc.com sports fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go the little guys. Calvin Borel does it again, Rachel Alexander yesterday, now Mine That Bird, and he did it on Street Sense a couple of yrs ago. Chip Wooley (trainer) drove the horse himself to Churchill Downs, 21 hrs with a pickup and trailer, stopping over here in Texas for a night. This little gelding only cost $9,500 as a yearling but had great form in Canada (top 2 yr old in 2008) then sold back to the US for $400,000. Just a great story for a great bunch of people and a nice guy jockey.
And at the 2008 January Keeneland mixed sale you could have bought mom for $8,000!
Sorry as a small breeder, you love these stories! Really great race and Calvin's emotion afterwards is what the Derby's all about. I galloped in the States for many years and had 2 horses run in the Derby. I can never describe to you how special and amazing a race it truly is. I only wish we could get more enthusiasim for flat racing over here. I forgot about the GNS 2mins after John Oxx's droll interview!
Going to go and give my High Chaparral filly and Kheleyf foals big kisses now! Long may the dream live!
it's on youtube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv8x9x5A49s&feature=featured
i had to watch it 3 times to see where he came from. unbelievable bit of horsemanship. he just lobbed along at the back and then pressed the turbo and accelerated up the rail. wow. absolutely fantastic.
Absolutely unbelievable. The speed he must have been going to cruise past all those other colts as though they were just cantering, from such a long way back too! Amazing.
met mind that birds breeders whilst over in kentucky for rolex through a friend they have now retired from breeding for the quieter life really lovely people think after this weekend and once the party has died down they may think again they still have mum
I think what is exciting about this horse is the fact his sire beat Smarty Jones in the 2004 Belmont preventing SJ from winning the triple crown. Why that is exciting, is many people say the Belmont is about breeding (that is why many horses were excited about Barbaro in 2006 - he was bred for a 1 1/2) - from his sire and dam sire it looks like the 12f should be feasible.
His race yesterday was certainly impressive - I really think the good jockeys stay off the pace, not get nervous and know when to ask. Calvin did the same with SS, Mike Smith did it with Zenyatta in the BC and it really does work.
I do not think his story is particularly nice and tidy - it seems his owners have some skeletons in their closet that have come out. Pity good owners are so much fun and racing really does not need these shady characters.
I really think General Quarters is the best story - his owner/trainer/groom is a 75 year old retired teacher who has a (yes one) racehorse for fun. He picked up General Quarters for $20,000 in a claim and found himself in the Kentucky Derby. He was the story I was rooting for.
I look forward to the Preakness - it is a fun year for racing.
Very impressive, but my only concern is it was on the slop he might not be able to do that on a dry track, nice pedigree though Norther Dancer / Mr Prospecter double cross and inbred on both + Nashua.
Probably won't know if he is a wonder horse, or its a weak year for 3yo until he meets the older guys in the summer, something to look forward too!
Wonder why he only reached 9k at sales, not seen his conformation?
