Has anyone experience with keratomas and the treatment and recovery from them?

Horse went for x-rays today with a suspected keratoma in near hind and sadly suspicions were confirmed (same horse I posted in Tack Room a while back about persistently resting near hind despite not being lame).

Feeling a bit low as we were set up for a fun summer and now looking at around 9 months out of play but on the bright side the problem has been identified and it is treatable.

Photo of x-ray for those interested: you can see the marker pin they placed at the toe- the semi circle cutting into the pedal bone above it is the keratoma.

Yes, a horse at my former livery yard had one. It was surgically removed and once the horn had grown back down he returned to work.

The recovery wasn't as bad as feared, but he was very good natured which helped him cope with the box rest and bandage changes.

Yes a friends horse at a livery yard also had one, she had it removed and was on box rest for a while but as far as I know returned to work again.
