My horse was diagnosed with a keratoma in her near fore this week following an MRI scan and xrays.

She's going in for an operation next Thursday to have an entire section of her hoof wall removed and the keratoma dug out. Then she will need a steel plate putting across her hoof to hold it together and box rest until it is sufficiently healed to be filled

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this? I'm not really sure what to expect, how long it will take for it to begin to heal, how long it will take for the hoof wall to grow back and how it will look.

If anyone has any advice or experience of either a keratoma or hoof wall removal for another reason then I would be really grateful, thanks

it looks a bit radical to say the least when first one, but it does repair and re grow. you need a good vet and a fantastic farrier. good diet with protein, biotin aand any hoof formulae avaialble. cornucrescin on coronet twice a day once initial op settles! hope you are insured! 8 to 12 months to grow a whole new hoof wall!. regular trimming and balancing of remainder of foot is vital!

Thank you for the info

I'm changing my farrier to one recommended by the vet who does a lot of their remedial farriery.

Insurance wise we're covered up to 5K for vets fees thankfully, they have added up what I've spent so far (the MRI itself was around £1,100
