Hi
Can anyone advise me please, my horse has a large hole in her foot where a stone got wedged in (she is unshod). I normally use cotton wool but was advise to use hoof putty; the trouble is it seems pretty useless and comes out after a day. I am just wondering if I am doing something wrong or if my tin faulty. I was surprised how hard it is in the tin and I had to dig it out with a knife. I rolled it in my hands until it got soft and sticky, filled the hole level with the hoof and left her in the stable until it seemed hard. First attempt I managed to putty stones into her foot, 2nd attempt half of it came out and then the hole filled up stones, 3rd attempt I used cotton wool soaked in purple spray and it's still in 5 days later!
At £17.50 a tin I am not too impressed! Is there a knack to using it, or does it sound like I need to take it back to the shop?
Thanks

I tried it a few years ago & had similar results as you have had. I couldn't get it to stay in the hoof. I tried warming it up before use. I moulded it in my hands, infact tried everything I could think of & it wouldn't stay in. I think my tin is somewhere in a box in the tack room.

If there is anyone out there that can tell us how to get it to stay in the hoof I would be very greatful as well. ;)

My farrier used it on my horse a good 4 years ago after digging a massive hole due to an abscess. It stayed in for a couple of weeks!! Whenever I put it in it after that it lasted a good few days but nowhere near as long, however, I can't recall how I did it I'm afraid. I'd never used it before so I can inly assume I followed the instructions on the tin.

Sorry (but my point, it has worked in the past!).

I used it to fill in gaps between my horses hoof and shoe when her feet were badly damaged and it worked fine and stayed in a few weeks.

It was however really hard to get out of the tin, I used a hoof pick and I actually put the bits I scraped out of the tin in my bra to warm up so I could get them soft enough to use!

My farrier used the keratex putty for mine when he had an abscess dug out and drained and it stayed in for 3 weeks! He said it needs to be packed in really densely, keep packing it in and pressing it in even when it looks level with the hoof surface. Once it has adhered to the hoof it should stay in there for ages. I have used it myself and it's stayed in well. It is supposed to be hard to get out of the tin, my farrier used his knife to scrape it out. Have you tried putting it in bowl of warm water to loosen it up a bit and make it easier to pack in? Is the hole really good and clean because my farrier used something first to clean the hole out, before he packed in the putty wax.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will try hot water before I resort to my bra!
I may not have packed enough in then from your comments.
Will have another go.
