After a long battle with my horses front feet, losing shoes and the hoof wall breaking up - looks very brittle. I have asked my farrier to remove his front shoes. (He has been barefoot behind for nearly a year now and the improvement in his back feet is amazing)
I have always used Kevin Bacon on his feet but I know alot of you on here recomend hoof heel. Is there any real difference in these products and if so which one is the best ?
Should I start using Karetex on his soles to help harden them up - he is sound in the school on grass and flat tarmac but footy on stone areas
Thanks

I would ask your farrier. Pete, my horse has awful feet from racing. Pulling countless shows off, very poor growth. I am going to try topspec in his feed. And I think our farrier suggested Kevin Bacon but he hasn't been over with it yet.

he sounds like he possibly has a fungal infection in the hoof wall so you need something like Eucalyptus with iodoform, or an antifungal treatment to kill it off otherwise no matter what you use on it the hoof will still keep splitting up. I get my vet to make me up the Eucalyptus and iodoform and i use it every time my horses are shod then routinely once a week. on new horses or horses with bad feet I put it on 3 times a week around the areas that are splitting and cracking. I then use hoof heel no more than twice a week. hoof Heal is great stuff BUT if you use it too much the hoof becomes too soft and rubbery and again keeping shoes on is tricky.

I have never found the hoof specific suppliments to make any difference whatsoever except for the Naf pro for feet and I have two on the yard so far that are on it an it does appear to be working. But you need t combine it with the anti fungal treatment and hoof treatment

I would say that you get better results by feeding a hoof supplement which will help with new healther hoof growth. There are plenty out there but I just use biotin. Also found that karetex was very expensive and didn't do the job with my horses soft feet but eucalyptus oil does

Hoof heal is an antibac anti fungal type that is very concentrated and only needs applying three times a week. This is the best product i have seen results from. The Kevin Bacon is good too though.

Thanks to all of you , sorry forgot to mention he has been on pro feet for about 6 months now - not really seen any difference though. Have also started giving him a square of jelly everyday - not sure if there is enough geletine in 1 square though to make any sort of difference. Would you feed more ?
His back feet are fab since we stopped shoeing them.
Think I will try a foot solution in case there is anything else going on with his front feet.
Really hope the no shoes helps his feet improve

I use hoof heal in the summer ( when feet get very dry and crack) and kevin bacon in the winter (I put on before turnout to stop feet getting waterlogged.

I had real problems with my horses feet breaking up - within 2 weeks of using Hoof Heal the cracking stopped and the shoes started staying on ( the fronts were comming off every week!!!!!) Haven't lost a shoe since (touch wood) and the difference in his feet is amazing. I tried all the expensive suppliments but none worked for him.

Hoof Heal is great stuff and under £10 a pot
