The day started better than last time we went dressaging. O/h got up in reasonable time to help with tail washing (grey with tail that *should* be white) while I plaited. I managed to plait without getting a plaiting needle embedded in my hand, so that was an improvement on our last set of plaits. And we actually left more or less on time.

It was wet & howling a gale when we got there, but that was okay as the warmup's inside. We were a bit onward bound as we did a jumping lesson yest, & at one point I couldn't stop in trot & had to run him into the wall.

Maybe not a good idea to rev up the old engine the day before dressage...

After that he settled & was doing some really nice work, relaxed, working from behind, giving me a good amount of bend etc. But then we had to venture outside to do our test.

V windy, driving rain, plus the College has got a nice new set of boards which look a bit like sj planks, so someone instantly switched to sj mode. To make matters worse, my aunt who was coming to watch had also invited some of her friends, so I had a load of witnesses to see me having a disaster...

Off we went up the centre line, very interested in these spooky white boards & not that interested in doing the test. Also not all that keen on the rain in his face & the gusting wind. Just about managed to hold the canter together on one rein, but on the other rein, Adrian did a v unexpected nap towards the nice dry indoor school & we ended up over the boards!!

So he DID manage to get his wish of doing a jump cos we had to jump back in!!

After that, it was all about damage limitation, trying to ride an accurate test while keeping a synchronised swimmer smile glued on... But what else can you do when all of a sudden none of your controls are working??? What a rubbish test. He was so obedient & on the aids indoors, but in the outdoor school with the weather and those inviting white planky trotting pole things that were just begging to be jumped, it went totally to pot.

Never mind. At least I remembered my test, didn't fall off and my aunt's friends' experience of horses is limited to pony trekking, so they didn't realise that nothing had happened in the test that was supposed to happen!!

We were 8th with 55% & I was really excited that we'd actually beaten 3 people who were on equal 9th...until I noticed that that was cos they hadn't actually turned up & had therefore scored 0!!

So the lessons to be learnt are 1) DON'T jump the day before a dressage comp and 2) Adrian needs more practise dressaging at the College as he's only bsja'd there so far, so no wonder he's confused. So we're going to do a test or 2 unaff next week & see if we can get through them WITHOUT doing any jumping!!!!

Was hoping to see Timefaulter & o/h there, but they were in the dizzy heights of medium, so that was later on.

He'll learn

Couldn't help but LOL!

Tia did exactly the same but into the judges car and it was a beautiful day when she did that so at least you have an excuse

You are mad, doing dressage in that weather! I have seen loads of horses spook at those new boards, even old experienced ones. Mine always get worried , the loud speakers are almost in the bushes and I'm sure the horses think the bushes are talking.

Anyway, how were the brakes and steering SJ?

The theory re sj atm is that I *should* be persisting with the french link snaffle & doing stuff like circling him away from the jump if he's pulling & making more use of half halts etc. He does settle if I can manage not to get into a tug of war with him.

I really want to get on & do some proper jumping, so keep wanting to find the perfect thing to whack in his mouth so that I can just sit there & look pretty. However, once he's stopped being so excitable, all of a sudden the snaffle is plenty & anything more stops the forward flow.

I think I need to be jumping with my whole body rather than getting too strung up on hands/bit/mouth. I'm getting an outdoor school at home in a week or 2, so the plan is to get some jumping equipt & do some polework after a schooling session ie concentrating on polework/jumping being an extension of schooling/dressage rather than something wildly exciting. But I had a LOT of trouble holding Cat, so if we're going a bit quick I do tend to panic & grab for my reins, which isn't always the right thing to do!!

We were doing some really good stuff in our lesson yest that I could try to replicate at home, concentrating on balance & control, not height.

He's 5, so now would be a good time to learn some manners!

Sorry guys but this post has had me in stitches!!! I have not yet had the pleasure of the "new" boards (and if I have it was uneventful!)

but know where you are coming from with the talking bushes!

Ah but did you know the new markers MOVE on their own?
OH comming up centreline to start test and big white cone with C on it is wandering off to the corner.
Makes for an interesting first turn.

Catembi, think I might have seen you there ...there were two greys in the warmup as I arrived. what class did you do??...not sure though... I will do my report soon of the day too!!!!!

Hey - 55% is brill considering you left the arena. I got 57 and 58% in 2 tests last week, and thought I would get over 60 as did nothing bad, just a bit downhill in canter and a little head tilting. We had outdoor warmup as well which was v exciting, airs above the ground much in evidence!!
Just put it down to experience and withdraw the next time the weather's so bad. Horsie obviously didn't enjoy snorkelling!!
Must admit mine were v similar hacking out this afternoon, crabstyle down the road.

Horses eh.. at least you know yours can jump!!!Yup, I think the conditions were awful so in my opinion you did mighty fine! I think it was not soo bad when I did my test.. I only needed goggles... I think you needed a snorkel!!!

Sorry but I did laugh at the thought of over the boards!
Our old stallion was pretty sensible doing dressage tests until at a new venue.
As he went past her car she sounded a buzzer not a bell and he instantly went into a lovely canter, anticipating jumping the boards.. It wasn't a high scoring test after that....

ooooh this should be fun then!!! Obviously I haven't experienced the new boards yet then!! Cos if the markers move on their own, Odie will throw an absolute fit, pretend he is a stallion, put in some spectacular rears and I'll probably end up in the county of canbridgeshire!! There's a lot to be said for having no motivation to compete at the moment, and given the reports about moving markers..... think I'll leave it for a while!

but we cant pick the weather!!!! should lead to some interesting tests in future tho as once the wind whips through there, its like a gale!

So what happened to the old respectable markers? You say they are cones????

Oh great!!!! now where can I find same cone to practice with!!!! The flower pots were bad enough last year, Odie thought they were gonna eat him! Not sure we can cope with 2'9 white cones!!!
Think I shall hang up my boots now!
