Am considering returning to a trailer and am considering a Kia Sorento but they all appear to be automatic. Does anyone have any views on towing with an automatic or indeed what they think of this model manual or otherwise?
I tow with this car. It is great. Automatic transmissions are much better than they were many years ago, and I believe that the theory is that the automatic gear change provides a smoother ride.
I know my parents tow me with a Kia Sorento - couldn't tell you if it's automatic or manual but we've certainly had no problems with it, towing or otherwise!
I tow with a Jeep Cherokee diesel automatic, I had an older manual version before it but the automatic is much easier and smoother to tow with. I wouldn't think twice about going for an automatic.
I have a manual kia sorento which tows an IW 510 with 2 big horses in very very well. The Auto sorento comes into the higher road tax bracket and will also be more expensive on fuel. I would stick with the manual there are plenty of them available.

Wrong - its in the same tax bracket F as the manual
CO2 Exhaust Emissions :
209 g/km - Manual Transmission
228 g/km - Automatic Transmission
It is greedy on fuel though, more so than a bigger engined 4x4 (may parents landcruiser).
However the auto is a dream to tow with plenty of power, you just have to be careful you don't speed!
Just make sure you don't need an extra oil cooler fitting to any auto vehicle prior to using it for towing.... it's cheaper than "cooking" an auto box if it's not up to the job..... Any reputable towing place (indespension etc) will be able to tell you, or a franchise garage.
