Would you mind letting me know if your car is jerky when you tow over rough roads.... talking normal roads which arnt motorway smooth, not off road..... yes I know I have done this to death in April.... but I am at the end of my tether now

I have had Kia out to look at the combination of a 56 plate 2.5 XE and my ifor williams 505 (2004).

They agree that it tows really badly, its jerky and you end up feeling quite sick

But they say its the trailers brakes lagging and not the car.

So off I go to the trailer centre where it was serviced in April (nothing found to need attention) and they came out with me, and agreed that it was awful

But when the trailer was hitched up to a Disco it was ok...... then we put a 510 on the back, whcih was the nearest we had to mine..... and it was still jerky.... soooooo is it the car or is it the trailer....

Its definately not the damper, and the brakes are not binding ... so I am at a loss to see what else there is on the trailer that can go wrong

It is hideous on bumpy roads which the trailer people said was the trailer jerking the suspension on the car and making the car jerk even more.

Finally does anyone live even vaguely near me (Farnham/Aldershot) who would let me feel how theirs tows??? Long shot and not expecting any luck on this one!!!

Kia dealers are now talking to head office technical support and will let me know next wed if they come up with anything. It has to go in for an exploratory, to find out why it stalls when you put the hazard lights on...... handy!!!

Big fat cookies to anyone who hasnt died of boredom by now

We have a kia, the only thing that we have noticed when towing is that it does seem 2 jurk forwards every so often but ive only noticed that on the motorway, other than that it has been fine, have never had any problems on the rough ground.
We tow a 510, usually with 1 horse in but have towed 2 big horses about and its fine with that. dont no if thats any help.......

Yes thanks MendipMagician.... any feedback is great as I need to prove to myself that I shouldnt just put up with this horrible ride

Also reassuring as the guy at the trailer centre was worried about my car towing an empty 510, let alone one with two neddies on board..... he was surprised that it could tow 3.5 tonnes!!!

Hi There,
I tow my Bateson Deauville with a Kia Sorento 54 plate XS. Two TBs in the back. Don't find it especially bumpy unless the road is seriously potholed. My problem is that I have a scrambler in the back whenever I turn right - and I crawl round corners. The other TB is fine though. This is the only problem I have towing with it. It is an automatic though?

I am in Kent (T.Wells way) so probably too far for you!

Merlin used to scramble till I took out the partition

now he is fine..... and the trailer man made me feel better by saying that the jerking isnt being transmitted to the trailer, infact the car is absorbing the jerking so the trailer is probably less bumpy

Mine is a manual, so not sure if this would make a difference.... the road surface only needs to be uneven, not potholed to make it bad..... the stuff they put before roundabouts is a nightmare..... looks smooth but is ridged...

Thanks for the offer but yes, kent is a bit far out

I would take out the partition - However - always travel the 2 together so problematic! He used to be fine, but then he had one bad journey (Mum forgot to chain the rear breech bar, it came out & must have knocked him on the hocks & he panicked) and since then we have had a mixture of great journeys (both eating hay all the way) to the horrid scrambling which absolutely ruins any trips as I am so worried!

But back to your issue - yes if the road is slightly uneven then I feel it more than if I were not towing, but it is not bad, doesn't upset the horses, and doesn't make me uncomfortable.

Good luck getting to the bottom of it!!

I have a 06 2.5D XS and tow a 510. Its smooth as anything, no jerking at all.

However did notice it was banging occasionally over pot holes and I got my mechanic to check the witter tow bar and where it attaches to the chasis underneath the car it had worked loose.

The only thing I can suggest is check your tow bar rig. However the Kia should tow like a dream even with 2 horses and a 1 ton trailer.

I would think that its my imagination, but both the trailer guy and the car dealer thought it was awful too..... so I know its not just me...

Oh well its going in for an exploratory next wed as when you put the hazard warning lights on the engine cuts out.....NICE!!!!

We have a kia sorento towing an Equitrek trailer. It's an 07 top spec and while we just had the kia called back and 2.5k spent on it to replace the faulty gearbox, we have never ever had any jerkiness, which tallies with the reports about it - it was towing car of the year a year or so ago.

Kia were very good about sorting my husband's sorento out and spent 2.5k to do this, so if there is a problem then I would persist! It can't be the trailer if you've tried another one and tried yours on a Disco.

And that guy at the trailer centre is bonkers - the sorento is one of the best towing vehicles. It tows a massive Equitrek with 2x500-600kg cobs in plus all our luggage when we go on holiday!! Also FANTASTIC up hills.

Ha ha..... thats a cracker.... my family (mum and dad anyway) knew they folded down and had me running their garden waste to the local tip within hours of me owning it..... no chance of not knowing that!!!

Poor old Kia has just had the transfer box replaced (originally I thought they said transmission but I was wrong)

still not towed with it though, maybe tomorrow for a test run.... will report back
