My elderly parents feed their bitch Bakers. I'm trying to get them to change it for something with better ingredients and wondered what people would suggest. The dog is 10 year old spayed collie, slightly arthritic and grossly overweight in spite of the fact that she gets 3 long off lead walks a day. The dog has been on a diet for a few months but doesnt seem to be losing weight and I wonder whether this is because she is being fed a "junk food" diet (I know Bakers isnt a good food). My parents arent well off and obviously feed Bakers cos its cheap. I've noticed a lot of people on here recommend Skinners as a cheaper but decent dry food but it does seem to be for working dogs. Is it therefore high calorie and therefore not suitable for a fattie?

I'm no feed expert but would get the dog off Bakers post haste. Skinners would be better and probably cheap enough too. They do a light and senior version that is suitable for all dogs :)

Good for you getting rid of that crap. I can't believe it's allowed! Once she drops weight, her arthritis may be alleviated.

I'd suggest a blood test to eliminate medical issues if she's off lead but still fat, unless your parents are overfeeding her massively.

A good kibble is Wainwrights advanced nutrition light, Pets at Home own brand.

As a cost concious exercise, could they no get free RMB from the butchers, and if they still want to feed with kibble (can do this, but dont need to), then a simple rice + Lamb kibble.

I managed to get my FIL to change his choccie labs diet, and he has gone (the dog) from roly poly, to catwalk model!! (and I he uses ribs from the butchers one day and a small bowl of kibble the next)

I am pure RMB, so have no kibble recommendations, sorry but hope its some help :D

As a diet then any tinned meaty dog food, one 400 gm max per day mixed with broad bran/All Bran cereal or bran flake cereal will do the job efficently. One of my girlies, Plum ,is on just a quarter pound of beef mince and bran flakes.Slowly, very slowly ,she is getting slimmer..she utterly refused tinned meat and All Bran which would be quicker.Bakers and the like are like BigMacs..not a lot of goodness and very fattening. Plum is a mini bull terrier who mshould weigh about thirty to thirty five pounds AND have a WAIST! We call her the bolster right now :D

Definately get the dog off of Bakers, Skinners is a good brand. It may also be worth getting the thyroid level checked at a vets.
