Kick? Should I be concerned?

Morning All,

It looks like my horse has had a kick from his field mate, near the end of his ribs & hip.

he doesn’t want me to touch it, but is fine in himself. Just eaten breakfast.

Do you think it’s worth speaking to the vet or just leaving it a couple of days?

The reason I’m not sure is because of where it is, kind of in a soft spot I suppose, poor lad!

I would ask the vet to have a look at that, tbh. He is telling you that it is painful because he doesn't want you to touch it, he can't really do anything else.

Why not send the pic to the vet and ask?

I’d probably see how it is later and reassess tomorrow if need be, on the basis it’s not near any bones. Could it be an insect bite?

Hard to tell from picture angle, but I’d run it by my vet sooner rather than later. Could be a broken rib?

OP says it’s in a soft spot so I was assuming not. If it’s on a rib definitely get a vet!

It could be a ‘soft spot’ created by swelling? It’s possible that a bone fragment may have moved back to where would normally be beyond the rib cage? ....could of course be non of that but better safe than sorry in my opinion.

Please if you are in any doubt get it checked out. For the sake of the cost of a scan when I was wondering if I should get a vet out to check as my boy had been kicked I saw this.............

Hi All,

Sorry I’ve not been able to reply I’ve been working.

I spoke to the vet this morning & they advised some bute & cold hosing, see how he is tomorrow.

They don’t think it’s his rib as it’s a bit further back.

But I’ll keep an eye on him.
