Today I had my mare vaccinated so she was feeling a bit sorry for herself to start off with. I spent a good hour grooming so I know what she looked like today... I put a lightweight turnout on her for tonight as the temperature is getting low. She went out and all of the mares in the field turned on her one of them gave her a walloping to her chest just onto her shoulder so in a very muscley area. She then wouldn't move in the field only backwards and was moving her head to her shoulder telling me she was hurting. I went and got her in from the field checked her over and in the affected area the muscle has almost seperated she's so sore to touch in the area. I hosed her off for 25 mins and gave her a sachet of bute. It's horrible to see her in pain but she's not lame so I'm thinking it's more chest than shoulder. Is there anything else I can do then call the vet out?
(I don't have any problem with calling a vet out but don't know if it's totally necessary right now)

If it feels like the muscle is damaged/ torn then she requires more than a sachet of bute to relieve the pain, it could also become infected if there is damage within the muscle so I would get the vet out in the morning unless she has made an obviously full recovery, which she may well do if it was just the initial sting and bruising that was bothering her when you touched her. Injuries to the chest can result in a hematoma that takes a long time to reduce so early veterinary treatment can help ensure they don't become a long standing issue.

Vet has been. She's got a Haematoma and her chest muscle has torn :((

Glad you got the vet out - I have only told you this story after you have seen your vet, other wise you would have worried needlessly but my friends horse came in from the field with a small graze to his shoulder. She asked me if there was anything she should put on it. At the time I can remember being slightly annoyed that she would even think it warranted putting anything on as it was so small a lump/graze and really insignificant looking and she was the type of person who worried needlessly most of the time anyway.

Turned out that horse had a broken shoulder. Only when it tried to get up from lying down in its stable in the night did the leg completely shatter from a fracture that had obviously occurred as a result of a fall or kick earlier that day. I felt so guilty afterwards, but it was such an insignificant injury and others that had seen the injury had felt the same as me and would have advised accordingly.

Another time I went to see a horse after losing my youngster to a compound fractured tibia (suspected hairline fracture which went following a fall in the field). It was the same colour/age/breed as the horse I'd just left with very similar markings. The lady said I couldn't try it as it had come in from the field that day a little lame on its shoulder but if I rang her a week later I could come out to ride it. When I rang her back she said later that the day after my visit the lame horse had broken its shoulder and was pts - this was due to the injury she had seen that day when I went to see the horse.

Just goes to show how a potential broken shoulder can be overlooked. I think I would always seek a vets opinion if I saw my horse walloped hard after this.

Hi Jess, My mare has suffered something similar (though my mare hasn't torn her muscle) just wondering what your vet has advised, mine, just cold hosing and bute for a week to see if the haematoma comes down. Is started to reduce and then yesterday it was up again not to the size it was but a little bigger than at the weekend... sorry for highjacking your thread and I hope she gets better soon xx

Hi Jess, one of mine had a huge haematoma from a kick. I gave about 10 high dose Arnica tabs in his feed & rubbed some of the Arnica gel on the haematoma. Someone also suggested i put caster oil on it (only 1 application) but check with your vet. C Oil took the hair away but grew back. It took a couple of weeks to go down but was big!
