hey all,

a new horse came to my yard and on tuesday morn he kicked the living hell out of my 4 year old gelding totally un-provoked. needless to say i ran up the field to chase him off my boy who was stood quivering in the corner blood pouring out of his front leg and his hock looked pretty mangled but by this time he was a bit muddy :( i got him in hosed it all out and assesed the damage.. The vet came out and did what he had to do gave me bute and anti biotics and put 2 stitches in the worst cut on his shoulder he said box rest for 2 weeks and gave me instruction to leave the wound alone just keep an eye on it and give him the bute and ABs oh and told me to vaseline below the cut so any discarge didn't stick to his hair. His hock has 3 superficial cuts but swollen up so just been cold hosing every day and applying sudo crem the shoulder has been looking good but this morning noticed a huge swelling on his knee and its warm. i cold hosed and thought about walking him out but the vet did stricty say no walking! hes not at all lame (although he is on bute today was his last lot) anyway i phoned the vet today but the guy i used wasnt on all today so the woman said remove one of the stitiches (wich i carefully done with some sterile scissors) and massage the leg wich also done and then to walk him if no joy with that but by this time it was dark so thought safer not to as i only have road to take him on. I'm going to see how it is tomorrow and give him a walk down the road but does anyone have any advice to reduce the swelling in the knee. Its just baffling how the kick is in his shoulder but the swelling is so much further down his leg, should i hot compress or stick with cold?

any advice much appreciated im absolutely beside myself that this has happened I keep my two horses by themselves (mum and son) and neither kick and they are both quiet but was trying to help out a friend by having their horse here and even my friend says this is totally out of character for the horse.

Are you sure he wasn't kicked on the knee too? Check the knee carefully for any tiny puncture wounds. You poor thing and poor boy!

There is definatley no puncture wounds (quite easy to see as he has white legs) he wasn't even lame after it at all hes fine in himself but just has this ball of swelling sitting on his knee i'm really worried incase it's the cut thats infected and its draining down into his leg? but hes up to date with his tetnus, on anti biotics and the cut on the shoulder is always clean. or could it just be the fact hes stood in? but then surely there wouldn't be heat like there is (i wish they could speak). Will see how it all is tomorrow it its no worse i will walk him plus no bute tomorrow so will see if he is lame at all, if no improvement by monday will call the vet out again.

It does sound as though he's had a kick on his knee. Even if there's no break in the skin. I have not known anything to drain that far away from an injury site before. Good luck with the vet and keep us posted.

Thank you, checked it today and still swollen but cold hosed, massaged the leg and walked him out hes had no bute and not lame at all and this evening it appears to have started slightly weeping out of the cut so will check again tomorrow and speak to the vet again. fingers crossed

it could be swelling coming down his leg from his shoulder, cold hosing and hot compresses both help with swelling as will massaging ( i bought some john whitaker massage boots). he could have banged his leg since.
