Well turned my boy out this morning. He's out with 4 mares. I should mention they've all been getting on fine and have been together since november(winter fields). Now One of the mares has been getting a bit above her level the past week and has been lunging at the others , kicking out etc. We thought it was just a change in the hierarchy however this morning she decided to have a pop at my boy when he yelled a face at her. I've never been so shaken up, they were bum to bum completely kicking lumps out each other. When they finally stopped(seemed like forever) I noticed mine had kick marks to his chest and sides(both wearing rugs) . I have left him out as hoping he'll walk any sore bits off. Mare went in the opposite direction. Obviously he's going to have sore bits and hopefully he won't be lame(he's a tough sort, never been lame) but do you think I could give a bute tonight or even half a packet?

Just going back up to check him. Will need to re think fields!

Thanks x

Horses will be horses and obviously something happend to cause upset! To be honest, if he seems fine inhimself and you can't see any obvious injury then i would leave him be. Check he's sound obviously but they are made of tough stuff and 9 times out of 10 they can do this and not do any harm to each other. Are they both wearing shoes?

I wouldn't necessarily think about having to change fields but maybe the mare is coming in to season hence why she's more touchy? I assume you don't own the mare as well? If she's causing issue within a usually quiet herd then maybe she will need to be taken out. However, sometimes they can just have these fall outs - I know my piny does (he's the boss) and he evene seems to hold grudges! He really fell out with my other horse the other week - for 2 days he decided he hated him. I think I discovered what the issue was when I found a kick shape mark on the boss's bottom! That would have really upset him as how DARE anyone of his heard kick him!! lol

I thought same probably coming into season...my old boy got on famously with mare and she had a couple of goes at him out of blue he is arthritic and came worse off he ended up with a swollen back leg and nasty cut that took weeks to heal up. I would leave alone and just keep an eye on him. They can have some right barnys...my neighbour has told me mine have gone hell for leather but when I have gone to see them its a sea of tranquility!!

Thanks for your comments. See, they were all in season towards the end of last year and he was always paired up with a different one every few days! It was more the girls giving a squeal to warn off as he was the guy they all wanted to be with. (que- my boy happily stuffing his face as the women fight over him! Lol)

I only say re-think fields as he will be out and onto his own patch as sOon as any grass comes in as he's a bit greedy. Also not sure if we want to risk the mares in full season as he can be a bit riggy.
