Kicked by someone elses horse

Hopefully, she will get another paddock soon as she tried to kick the owner last night after been fed and she was just speaking to her.

The YO needs to do something asap, it's one thing for a dominant mare to be bolshy when there's food around but if she's just a moody mare who kicks a lot then I wouldn't want my yearling sharing a field with her, especially if she's shod.

I am going to speak to the YO over the weekend, as something will need to be put in place. Bearing in mind that the owner is a 12 yr old boy (well his mum owns her but its his horse) and that could put him in a dangerous position.

Thankfully, she is only shod at the front. I was thankful after I got kicked that she wasnt.

Good luck with the YO! And bet you were - I got double barrelled by a friend's (shod) horse I was looking after earlier this year, luckily didn't do any serious damage but was hobbling for weeks!

Thanks. Hopefully something will be done. There is a spare paddock at the yard but the fence is broken and would be too dangerous to put any horse in it at the moment - which is a bit of a pain.

Yes, I was hurt but not badly thankfully but ended up under my yearlings legs and I cant stress how thankful I am that she just stood still and let me get up.

The only soloution is take your young horse out and feed it elsewhere, does she have a stable? I find feeding horses in fields all together just does not always work and can lead to kicking and then an accident, its not worth the risk as next time you or your horse could get really hurt.

To be honest I would not take feed to a field that had other horses in other than my own, it just causes a riot and is not worth the risk.

Even the most mild mannered horse can get nasty when there is food involved, simple answer is dont feed your horse in the field why should the other livery move her horse, never heard of this as common practice in a livery yard.

The other livery was in another paddock before mine and it was only put into my paddock to help them out, so we are waiting for her old paddock to become available again, so she can go back into it.

YOer is completely responsible for all of this they need to get there bum into gear and mend the fence pronto.

How can the owner of the kicking horse complain about having a sectioned off bit because she will have to fill up its water, surely that is one of the main jobs when having a horse! I can quite see now why she wants you to feed this horse as well, clearly that's job done for her, horse watered and fed and she gets to stay in!

I would definitely take my whip and hat in with me until that horse learns to respect personal space. I wouldn't worry about what the owner says about it either, you are defending yourself. Maybe she might think twice and move the horse out the way! You don't want your little baby picking up any tricks from this horse either!

I think you should definitely have words with the yard owner and then it is her responsibility to sort something out with the kicking horses owner!

Yours and your horses safety is priority!!

I would never feed my horse in the field, it's just inevitable that someone will get hurt- particularly with mares. Iv seen my horse double barrel another in the field after being given a polo mint so I learned never to do that again! Can u not bring your youngster out of the field- feed- then turn back out?

The reason they are not wanting to fill up water in a smaller paddock is because they dont have much time (dont we all).

I spoke to the yard owner and she is going to try and get the spare paddock fence fixed so that it will free up the mares old paddock and she can move back into it.

The mare is just not the nicest mare to work around, always having to watch yourself around her. Even when we were having to poltice her foot, she was wanting to kick out. Also, I dont think the owners are "tough" with her when she does do something bad, whereas if my horses were to step out of line, obviously they need told.

Hopefully, in the next few days, something will be put in place - it was calm over the weekend, only because the owners were up and had her in and that gave me the chance to take my horses in with no problems and feed them inside.

I do take my youngster out of the paddock, its the getting her out of the paddock that is the problem. Even without food involved, she is in your face with my youngster but she doesnt come near when its my older mare.
