hi all

so on wed this week my lovely horse mistook me for a fly and kicked me.I was knocked out for a couple of minutes
Now i was very lucky not have broken my jaw but i have got lovely bruising all over my left side of my face :o
I also got mild concussion

now since then i have had problems eating and headaches and jaw ache.
So my question is i hope i am alone but incase i am not how long will i feel like this for? ive kind of had enough now and want to be able to ride (hat won't fit on too swollen) and just get on with life.

thank you for making it this far

Nicky

Hi you may need your jaw xrayed:eek::eek: Do your teeth feel "out of line", can you open your mouth fully and do you have pain either opening your mouth fully or clenching your teeth? If the answer to any of these is yes you need your jaw xrayed.

Please tell me you went to the hospital? What did the doctor say?

I guess it is going to be at least another week, maybe two. I have never been kicked in the side of the head but can imagine the pain and swelling that must cause, it's bad enough being kicked in the leg etc.

Have a big *hug*, it must be so painful :(

hi well i did get lots of xrays on my jaw and the doctors were all surprised that it was not broken but its really achey and no can not open mouth fully and certainly can not chew hard food on soft stuff :(

Echo this hope you went to hospital?? but ouchee my foal decided to "place" his foot on my head a couple of weeks ago blimmin hurt and that was "placing" not striking..hope you feel better soon :)

Hey, I hope you feel better soon.

Everyones injurys and healing times differ, but hopfully you'l be back in the saddle soon.

I got kicked in the face when i was younger, docs coulnt work out why my jaw wasnt broken. beautiful bruising

However just recently (now 15 years on) i had to get physio for my jaw, the first time ive had trouble with it since the accident. The physio reckoned it had to do with my muscles tensing and holding my jaw inplace after the accident, and become more constricted than average. Over time this made me only eat on one side of my mouth and my muscles constricting even more on the other side to compensate.

This resulted in very very tight and sore muscles on one side of my jaw which needed massages and excerices bow 15 years on from the incident.

So please, ask your doc for info on how to avoid this, or dont just use the one side!

It never even crossed my mind i was any different to anyone else until the physio said i should be able to fit 3 fingers in my mouth when my palm is flat - this is impossible for me.

PM me if you want any more info, sorry if this post isnt what you were looking for.

:)

If they xrayed it then it is most likely just very very bruised. Which you would expect really. It would also be very traumatic to the joints so they would be bruised too, and maybe some of the soft tissues like ligaments or whatever is around there.

Try arnica tablets to reduce the bruising?

Hope it feels better soon, but if not in a couple of weeks go back and get it xrayed again in case they have missed something. The swelling should have gone down by then so they might get clearer xrays? I'm not sure how it all works but i'm sure i've heard that before. Unless is was just an excuse for when they missed my OH's fractured wrist :p

Oh well that is excellent news that nothing was broken:) I expect if it is that badly bruised it will be a good couple of weeks. Your poor thing. Hope you feel better soon.

I really hope you get better soon! I once had my head smaked against the metal partion bars in the lorry .. and got a fat lip at the same time .. but nowhere as bad as being kicked! My concussion lasted about a week/maybe a week and half.

I hope you get better soon and that you can soon eat again! xx

Really glad to hear you are ok and that your jaw is not broken.

I have been suffering from TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and just feels like I’ve been kicked in the side of my jaw but thankfully haven’t. My Chiropractioner diagnosed my symptoms within 30 secs of my appointment but my GP just said keep taking the painkillers and the problem I have will go away!!!
I am 99% sure it’s down to bad dental work / bite alignment. However, you may want to check joint pain out on the internet and I’m sure a visit to a chiro or physio who specialise in this area would make you feel a lot better and get your jaw functioning better.

I hope this helps and you will be feeling better soon as I know how you feel - it makes you feel ****!

thank you all so much. a lot of what you said made a lot of sense i guess its still early days so im still healing.
thank you greymeadow i did the test and although i have very restricted movement i don't have any clicking or grinding sounds.

i hope to be on more solid food this time next week :o otherwise i shall go to the doctor.

Pity you can't get pics on here Nicky :p Would love to see a proper pic of that black eye :D

Seriously though, you know injuries take time to heal so relax and take your time getting back in the saddle. At least you aren't on crutches this time :p

Ibot - you don't necessarily have to have clicking or grinding sounds; however you are still healing and the bruising will still be coming out.
Keep to eating soggy food for a while until you start to feel a bit better ie. porridge, weetabix, sheppards pie, spagetti bog. (sorry it can be boring) so that you don't have to chew to much and keep away from eating toast or rump steak.

Do you have pain in your shoulder/neck/hip?

Last year O/H got a flying kick to the side of the head by a startled little section A. He was left with a perfect bruise in the shape of her hoof around his ear.
Was sore for a good couple of weeks before he felt even slightly better. Would be worse for you I would imagine if you have hurt your jaw (which will hurt everytime it moves!) its going to hurt a while longer!

omg Nicky! That sounds very nasty and painful.I hope you are feeling better soon. Echo the others and get it re xrayed if it doesn't improve within the next 10 days or so.
