My greyhound Joe has never done the feet scuffing/kicking thing after doing weeing or pooing out on walks UNTIL lo and behold he just started doing it a month ago - two years after I adopted him! He now does it probably about 70% of times. He's been neutered since I got him (he was three) and he's now five...I'm curious as to why this instinct has just kicked in! From what I've read it's thought to be a scent-marking thing, so maybe he's only just become confident enough that he thinks he's now hot-stuff? :D He was very shut down when I first adopted him, and is still month by month getting more and more full of himself :D so that was my first thought. Anyone got any other theories?

(Incidentally I was at an outdoors socialisation class with him the other day and he had a wee against the fence, then kicked his feet - the trainer told me I would have to stop letting him do that as it was empowering him...*rolling my eyes so hard*)

mine have always done that. i thought it was normal behaviour . cant understand why trainer says to stop him. my spayed bitches have always done it as well. as my neutered terrier...what a beautiful face your boy has....

Only our eldest bitch does it, but she is bottom of the heap so if it helps her to feel any way empowered good luck to her!
He is a handsome boy.

Beautiful boy xx All mine do it ... dogs & bitches, neutered or not ... i've often thought it may also be a learned behaviour & they copy each other.

One if mine does the other doesn't. The one who does is the more obedient of the two... clearly he's empowered enough to behave himself.

I suspect your theory is correct about why your boy has just started it. Maybe a couple of bitches near by have come on heat too?

Thanks all! Really interesting to hear about whose do and don't! I don't think it can be a learned behaviour with Joe, as we don't tend to go for walks with other dogs - and we've only been to this class twice - so I think it must be just that he's feeling more confident in himself. Does seem strange to start doing it mid-life, though! :D
