Hi all just wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom?
So our mare is very mareish, she has never much liked horses being too close behind, she will squeal and kick out if they do, sometimes double barrels the poor horse behind her. When ridden she rarely does it, my daughter has had her a year and manages to do pony club rallies, hacking in groups or alone, schools with others passing her etc absolutely fine. Its really not been an issue.
However over winter she had lots of investigations as her behaviour got worse in that she was kicking in the stable at nothing, generally very grumpy. Scanned ovaries, no issues. Had a regumate trial in case, no difference. Had a lameness work up and hind leg xrays as she was a bit stiff behind, and shes got hock OA. She was also a bit sore in her back, her saddle no longer fitted so she had a new saddle over winter too.
She's had Arthramid injections 6 weeks ago and physio, the physio is happy with her progress and her back seems much less tender. She is a bit stiff in front we've noticed, the physio wonders if it is more arthritis in one of the front feet, but we are going to wait and see how she goes.
Anyway she's fine in the school, but has started bucking on hacks. She's not hacked much at all since January, so when she does go out she's quite fresh and keen. She hacked yesterday and a group of geldings came over to the fence and she started squealing and kicking out at the fence, my daughter made her walk on and she did continue to kick out and buck and squeal. Once we were past the boys she did stop, eventually. She was hacked again this morning by YO and she was at the back of a group of 3 horses and did buck a bit, nothing behind her. They aren't bucks like she's trying to get you off, its more excitement? She does it in walk mainly.
She's not bucking or kicking at all when in the arena and isn't bothered by horses at the fence line in the arena. I'm not sure whether shes just fresh hacking and excited, and feels threatened by the horses? Or its something else.
She's on Oestress all year round and like I say, has always been a kicky mare! Thanks
