Hello I’m back again for help ! My boy is diagnosed with stage 2 kidney failure. Hes had increased water intake / weeing. Waking up early 4am ! Pacing :/ So had another tribe test back yesterday. All ok. No protein. Just low gravity. Bloods were done in may. We were hoping he could have something for his nausea but nothing can be given:(. He’s constantly acting like he feels sick :(. Licking lips , eating grass and agitated. This morning he bought up bile:( He’s currently on pronefra a phosphate binder and burns. She’s recommended just using a wet food to give him moisture. It’s just upsetting seeing him unhappy. He’s usually so cuddly. And it feels daunting. On stage 2 and he’s suffering:(. Has anyone any advice on how to help his nausea please? Charlie is a terrier cross who will be 13 in October. He’s my baby :(. Thanks:)

There is a tablet version of the injection, unsure if licensed for daily long term use but have worked with oncologists who send patients home with a course. Should be possible to request some for days when he's feeling sicky / there may be other options available as well. (depending on how good / bad his bloods are may also benefit from spending time in vets on fluids if high kidney values are reason for feeling sick).

If current vet is unable to offer a solution to this & you feel is happening often enough to affect QOL then a second opinion (or referral to a medical specialist) may be advisable

Thanks for the response! That’s interesting. Would it be possible his kidneys (bloods) have worsened despite his urine test showing no protein. As bloods fone early may. But only did a urine test last week. It’s just his behaviour has changed. Thanks

Please see another vet asap. My old boy had kidney failure and then heart failure and if I'm honest, I'd have let him go after diagnosis if I'd known what was coming. It's horrible for them. I've also realised small animal vets seem to think they need to do "everything they can" to keep them going when my horse vet would have been much more pragmatic. Ime things can worsen very quickly despite meds.

Oh this sounds awful:(. I have to admit I’m terrified of what is to come. Some days he seems just I don’t know unhappy. I’m finding it hard all ready. It’s a awful thing plus there age isn’t helping. His chest isn’t great v and he’s got a little arthritis. It’s rubbish. I just want to have him all over again. What stage did find out/ you loose your boy?

It's so hard isn't it. They really are a member of the family. Mine was S2 kidney failure and they missed his heart failure until I changed vet. By then his heart was stage 3. From that point he was put on about 5 different drugs, to review in a week. By day 5 I had the vet out to put him to sleep at home as he just couldn't get out of his bed. It was heartbreaking and one of the worst things was that because of the organ failure they couldn't inject normally. He had to had a sedative, which made him even more nauseous and then the injection had to go into the heart. Never again.
I hope your little dog has a better time of it and you can get him comfortable.

Oh this sounds just awful for your. Little man :(. I’m sorry to hear of your pain. Charlie just seems so flat. I don’t know what else to describe him. He’s eating well but just so tierd and no drive. It’s breaking my heart. He’s my soul. I just want to make him happy;(.

I'm afraid that you need to consider his quality of life now. Unfortunately when we get them we know that they are unlikely to outlive their humans. It is not an easy decision to make but we have to put our own emotions to one side and make decisions in the best interests of the animal, thinking about who we are keeping them going for. Please get a 2nd opinion asap and if there really is no other medication available, do the responsible thing. Your dog doesn't sound at all happy.
