I'm currently looking after two dogs for someone; gorgeous 11 month old lab bitch and a 6 year old Border Terrier. I looked after the pair of then for two days late last year and the owner mentioned at that time that the border terrier was rather thin despite a good appetite and owner didn't know why. Anyway, she still looks poor and I've noticed that she seems to drink quite a lot - particularly noticeable on walks as she stops several times to drink from puddles. Mine drink from puddles, too, but I've kept the border on a lead (as she's prone to "taking off") whereas my dogs tear around madly off the lead and wear themselves out, so I can understand that they become thirsty. Is weight loss and excessive thirst a sign of kidney problems in dogs (like I said she is only 6) or possiby diabetes? Anyone out there with any knowledge of these problems?? Thanks!

Like I said in my post, I'm only looking after them for a few days - they're not my dogs. However, if I had a young-ish dog with a good appetite which was losing weight, I'd be straight off to the vet! I'm hoping to get a better response to my post than I've had so far - surely someone out there could give me some ideas as to the problem, then I can pass them on to the owner on her return from Finland on Wednesday!

I would be concerned that it maybe diabetes - classic symptoms are weight loss, excessive thirst and lots of weeing. Is easy to test for and can be effectively managed, life expectancy is not affected. Would suggest a trip to vets asap. A check up will either put owners mind at rest or if a problem is identified the dog can be treated and made comfortable asap.

Yes - this is what I thought! Border is underweight yet has a massive appetite. Drinks excessively and pees like mad, too! When I return them to their owner on Wednesday, I'll have a chat with her.
