I hope I put all the info people need on here as I won't be able to come back on until tomorrow evening :(

I have a nearly 14 year old spayed JRT bitch who is having treatment for Cushings and Dementia (Vivitonin and Vetoryl) she has recently had a blood test which has shown that her Urea and Creatanine levels are high. She went into the vets yesterday for the whole day on fluids and the levels dropped massively to normal levels. They have suggested I put her on Hills K/D wet as she won't eat dry food any more. She is very happy in herself and enjoys her food, walks and sunbathing (under the hedge) in the garden. The vet had suggested after the first blood test that she only had a few weeks left and that she would need at least one day a week on fluids and yet the other vet after the 2nd test said she may need one more day on fluids in a couple of weeks.
Has anyone got any experience of kidney problems in dogs at all, what is the general life expectancy? Are there any treats she can have, she loves dried tripe a couple of times a week, can she still have this (the vet said to stop all treats but didn't ask what I gave her)? Hills K/D has 14% protein but the food she is currently on (Forthglade) only has 12%, should I leave her on this?
Any advice will be gratefully received and I do realise that the end is coming, the vet and I had the conversation yesterday and I have the money for euthanasia and cremation put to one side ready :-(

I had a Lab (12) yrs old who had a very similar diagnosis. In desperation we took her to see Chris Day, the homeopathic vet in Faringdon, Oxfordshire. http://www.alternativevet.org/
Not only did our dog have kidney failure, she had arthritis. The upshot was that after an hours consultation, he gave us some pills which were nothing short of a miracle. Chris was honest and said he could not cure the kidney failure, but he could stabilize it. Our dog had a further 2.5 years of good quality of life, there is no way we'd have seen her suffer, we loved her too much.
I fed her on cooked chicken and rice which she loved. It is important to keep the protein levels down as much as possible.
I'm not saying that Chris Day could do the same for your dog, but it could well be worth a try.
