I put a post on here a few weeks ago: Saying that I was judging some teenagers riding a prelim dressage test as part of a 'pony day' at yard.
Thanks to the people that sent me some tips. It went very well. I was able to put down lots of positive comments and some improvers. I looked mainly at riding, accuracy and willingness to move forward. (Pretty much ignored outline). They all enjoyed it and I fancy having a go at a bit more judging now!

yay, glad it went

Tis good fun isnt it?

Yes I was worrying that I was not going to be consistent in my marking between tests/riders. But it all worked out and the order of placings was right. The lowest mark I gave was a 5 the highest a 9, mainly 6,7,8s. (I scored it higher than a prelim at a normal comp would be scored). Yes good fun and I would like to do some more now....

Excellent. Its great fun, you get fed and watered too!

If you want to do more, get in touch with your BD representative and go along to the next Judge Training Seminar which is usually held at a training venue. Its very informative, you get to see victims (

) riding various tests and you all judge them. The trainer, who will normally be a List 1 judge gives you so much advice and tips.

Dressage needs more people like you. Go girl

Yes that sounds good. My YO owner is keen to judge too so we could go as a double act!! I would not mind judging showing too but I think DR would be more interesting.

One thing you might like to try, especially if it's children, to encourage them, is do a class that I judged at Hallingbury Hall on Friday. The riders do Prelim 1 where the emphasis is on rhythm, suppleness and contact and the general overall picture. They ride the test, it gets judged, they get their sheet back with the judge's comments and then ride the test again to see if they improve. Judges are usually told not to give "riding lessons" on the sheets, but here it is very informal and there is more leeway. A little lad called Matthew on a tiny pony called Nutkin won and he couldn't have been more than about 8. He deserved to win as he did one of the best tests I've seen at this level - consistent rhythm, forward going, accurate transitions, obedient pony and even going in an outline. So well done Matthew!
