Hi, after seeing my daughter's finished costume for the fancy dress class at the children's show on Sunday, my son has asked to enter the class too

Too late to include him in the costume already made and he wants to be different to his sister.

Pony is 12.2 grey with lots - and I mean lots - of mane.

First option is lion and unicorn with son as lion and pony as unicorn, complete with horn on bridle and emblem/shield thingy on saddle.

Second (and last !!) option is wild animals with son as lion and pony as zebra. Would face paint be ok for stripes on the pony and would I need to practise?

Which one would be most obvious to judge and people watching. Son didn't know about the lion and the unicorn so is that too old fashioned?

Huge mugs of hot chocolate with all the trimmings in return for any help received.

Loving the wild animal theme - good luck with the stripes though - maybe you could sow stripes onto a black rug, or put black lines on an old sheet and strap it on? No idea about face paints on ponies - maybe try a patch test on him first?

My most favourite simple fancy dress I've ever seen was a polo pony - dobbin covered in polo wrappers, with tail knotted up polo style, rider dressed for the game carrying a broom for a mallet. Still makes me chuckle 10 years later! But maybe that's just my warped humour!!!

Enjoy & please post a photo after the event!

What about painting 3 lions on the ponies butt and son being in an England strip - or you could put the st george cross on his butt and some "football" socks on the pony or if you have loads of time make up some flags of the world cup and attach them to the pony's mane

have fun whatever

sheet to go over pony with a cupboard drawn on it, fake witch attached to the lion - for the lion, the witch and the wardrobe? thought that a witch would be easy and stenciling a sheet to draw cupboard doors? but do post pix after Saturday!

I get the impression from your costume options son wants to go as (or you already have a costume for) a lion.... so how about he's a sleeping lion and you dress the pony up as 'the jungle'? You could use food colouring to dye his main green, use a green rug (or sheet), green leg bandages and attach real/fake foliage as much as pony permits (cardboard leaves in browband/ neckstrap, plait string 'vines' into mane and tail etc).

Is the pony quite chunky (cob like)? Our cob is being borrowed for a fancy dress class so a friends child can be dressed in a sweetcorn costume = Corn on the Cob. He will be led so I suggested the leader dress as a Jolly Green Giant.

Loving the ideas. Will suggest polo player, footie theme (very topical) and lion, witch and wardrobe to him tomorrow and see which one he wants to go for. They would all be much easier than using mummy magic to transform hairy pony into zebra :D

Keep the ideas coming and will try my best to add photos after Sunday

I'd say go for the lion and the Unicorn :) I'd imagine that the judge would get it? And I have no idea how I'd do stripes on the pony either...:P

We did a micheal jackson themed fancy dress, with pony wearing an afro wig and all.....we were the only people in the class who didn't get placed :O and I put so much time and effort and MONEY into that costume ... :(

That's what his sister is going in as! Missed last two posts and yes have lion costume and hot tips from friend on how to face paint him. Also have lots of green left over from corn cob costume to do jungle for pony and go as sleeping lion. Pony is a saint and won't mind what we put on her.
