Kids hacking on roads

I do get what you're saying ester, but I don't think kids should have to miss out to make life easier for adults. Plus its a great skill to learn from day one to set them up for a lifetime. From being a toddler on lr mine has hacked on roads. Admittedly at that age on very quiet short stretches. And I can guarantee that by adulthood she won't ever be one of those posters you see on here complaining that someone had a too loud engine, that ALL drivers are rude, or that someone had a lawn mower switched on in a garden etc because its part & parcel of riding to her. Sure you know the types of posts I mean!

I have never seen or heard of a car accompanying riders and slowing down following traffic, as per OP.

But have been stuck in a very large tailback on an A-road following a gypsy trotting race with a similar pair of accompanying vehicles.

I would have guessed that would be illegal (not what the children were doing, but the driver/s).
Does anyone actually know or is everyone guessing a bit, as I am?

Even if its not strictly legal I reckon you'd not get in trouble for it. Same as cyclists shouldn't be on pavements but coppers don't object to little kids on bikes on them. And on two occasions when I decided it was prudent for daughter & pony to be on pavement we've met police. Once in a car, who just waved & smiled, & once on foot. Lady officer just said hello & said how cute they were. And its not legal to ride on pavements either.

Racing on the public highway is illegal, on anything except on foot, AFAIK. Also the gypsy races are illegal because they block roads off and race on both sides of the road. I don't think that what this driver was doing was illegal.

Is it legal for a child up to 16 to ride a bike on the pavement these days? I quite often move horse onto pavement to let cars past as we go through a busy narrow bit and it makes sense, trouble is no one wants to let me back on the road after ;-) luckily quite a lot of our pavements are cycle paths so I am mostly allowed and I have never had police mind either.

eta no.169 of the highway code:
Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.

But if the kids were all over the road while you were behind them, then it obviously wasn't a safe time to pull over and let other cars etc past..

I dont know what your problem is you crazy women! I have a daughter, i drive a nissan terrano and i ride horses. When have i said i have a problem with riding 2 abreast???? I think your head needs looking at! Get off your high horse! My problem is people riding around residential areas which are 20-30mph limits with a 4x4 escort, totally unnecessary and puts car drivers in a predicament of trailing behind for miles or attempting to pass when at the time of pulling out it was safe and clear but by the time you are level with the horses something may have pulled out of a side street etc so go away and bore someone else. You obviously have a problem with people who need to go about their daily business.

Crikey! Thought this was a joke at first, but sadly its not. You sound too angry to be out on the roads!
