I'm looking to send my daughter on an unaccompanied riding holiday. I've been looking at one called Bilsdale just outside York. Has anyone been to it or can anyone tell me anything about it? Any other suggestions for riding hols would be most appreciated!

I remember going to Wellington riding when I was 12 and again when I was 14.

It was AMAZING!

I still remember the ponies names (sparrow and the cracker for anyone else who ever went!) I actually have a picture of me jumping xc with cracker on the wall of my study!

It was great they had cabbins in the woods, a really nice team and good bunch of kids and lots of fun. Huge gymkana day at the end of the week with rosettes etc, and a mini dressage test plus a group ride to music with jumps etc.

I would very much like to go back.....

Im just about to turn 28 and married with two children!! :D

I can tell just from the website that it's the real deal. It shows as being fully booked for the weeks we're free.... gutted!

My daughter spent a week at Endon Riding School in Stoke on Trent a couple of years ago, she was 12 at the time and went on her own! She absolutely loved it even though she was very homesick. Her confidence grew immensely in the week she was there. We went to visit before booking so she could have a look round and see the facilities and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Thanks for that, just looked at website and it looks really good. Hope they've still got availability. Wellington was fully booked for July. Also it's a bit closer to us in Lancashire. The search for a riding holiday continues!

Another one for Welllington. My kids (8 and 11) went there for a week at Easter and had a fantastic time. Great facilities with loads of schools, a cross country course and lovely hacking. Would definately send them again. Shame they are fully booked for the time you want.:(

I had cracker for the week at Wellington too :) went a few times when I was younger and remember sparrow too :D I also went to wheal buller and loved it. Would recommend both.

Thanks for the comments. It's not going well... can't get a place at Endon or Wellington for July. Does anyone out there know of any others? Getting a bit desperate......help!

My daughter used to ride Cracker in lessons at Wellington - didn't do the holidays but all her friends that did loved it. I would suggest ring and ask to go on a waiting list for the week (s) you want while you hunt for a holiday, as sometimes people do have to drop out - illness, broken limbs, dying relative and so-on, you can always take your name off if you find something.

A friend of mine suggested here : http://pinelodgeexmoor.co.uk they have some lovely ponies and rides over Exmoor and do childrens holiday weeks during the summer.

Wheal buller Cornwall is amazing! Been there three years as a child. Do 4-5 hours riding a day. Xc, sj, side saddle, beach rides, day rides, mock hunting, swimming with the horses etc. It really is fantastic and can't recommend it enough!

I went on a DREADFUL riding holiday with my friend when I was about 12. It was in malvern I think and called Riley Hill Farm. No Idea if its still going, would think not when you look at all the processes in place for safeguarding children,CRB checks etc. Horses were lovely but the owner left us with her 2 older teenage son the entire time who were incredibly sleazy and made us very uncomfortable by constantly trying it on, and a very young girl. (About 7) also on holiday ran away and they wouldn't believe us, she was gone for about an hour walking down country lanes by herself in the dark in her PJs crying. My friend and I ended up taking bikes as going to find her as they insisted she was hiding in the garden! Really bad memories!!

My daughter went to Bilsdale 14 years ago. She had a brilliant time and couldn't speak highly enough off them She was 15 at the time.

Hi folks. Still looking for a good place to send my daughter for a riding holiday. No places have come up at Wellington so far so could do with some other options. Any ideas?

Look at www.willowfarmholidays.co.uk Ive been to both them and to Bilsdale. Both really nice families who only take small groups so kids dont get left out and are treated as one of the family.
Willow Farm is Lincs Bilsdale is Yorks Both are Approved centres I checked.

Me too!!!!! Lovely pony!

I went three times and had tiny, cracker and zorbet as my ponies! Amazing!

I also went to wheal buller in Cornwall but if you're looking at Yorkshire that's prob a bit far!

I really enjoyed Scottish Equestrian Hotel based at Lanark racecourse stables. They do train/airport pick ups by arrangement. Was a while back but went back as an adult as better value than riding lessons in London and enjoyed it (also met my now husband...) They used to work with PGL who probably offer similar holidays still and had a good variety of activities for riders from beginners up. Evenings were fun too.
