My horse is rather strong and the long set-up into xc fences is costing us time. At combinations it is also very hairy and too fast. I have tried many bits (pelhams, waterfords, gags etc.) but they just seem to make him even more eager or he becomes dead in the mouth completely.

As we approach fences, I ask for him to slow the tempo a little which results in him throwing his head in the air. He wears a running martingale and is in a loose-ring snaffle for everything else. All his teeth/saddle/back have been checked recently.

I was wondering whether anyone had any experiences of the Kineton? And if I were to get one, where is the best place? I would normally just go out and buy one but they are £90!

I used one donkey years ago on a very strong hunter! Like you I had tried everything else without much success, a friend gave me a kineton to try and we never looked back. Gave me much more control and more importantly brakes! I don't know where you would get one from though, try "google" to see where you can get one from.

Yep, had one on a previous horse who used to pull like a train, hated poll pressure and just leant on the straight bar of the pelham. I tried it on a whim, mum had one in the tackroom from first time they were "popular" years ago, and it really did work. £90 is ridiculous, is that what they are going for now?!

Sounding good, thank you :) I just checked on Jeffries and they are £72, less than what I thought they were but still a bit much to take a risk on (they also only have havanna and all my tack is black)! They do come up on ebay sporadically but are either the wrong size or colour etc.

Oooh just found one on Dever for £38...next purchase I think!

Thank you, horse is currently yard-bound due to strangles on yard but will hopefully be out and about mid June.

It was the answer to mine who could get extremely strong cross country and would sometimes also get his tongue over the bit if I ended up with too tight a hold on him. It made him manageable and also cured the tongue problem.
I don't remember mine being expensive, I'd wait until a second hand one comes up on ebay.
