Hi Everyone,

Ive just joined to see if anyone can offer advice on our King Charles cavalier. He’s 20 months old and seems to be allergic to everything. He’s had allergy tests and receives an injection once a month that should help. Unfortunately, he seems to get very stressed, especially in the evenings and rubs himself against the furniture to relieve his itch.
Other times he just looks stressed, panting a lot and we are worried there’s something other than his allergies that are annoying him.
Can anyone offer any advice on what to do to help him when he is stressed?

Thanks in advance!

I had a dog years ago that was allergic to so many things it was impossible to not have contact with something that set his skin off.

Things that I could do something about were food, what cleaning products I used and what I washed his bed or anything else he had contact with. Also things like air freshener ( plug in and sprays) can affect them. I could only use washing up liquid, and a mild one like Ecover, never anything stronger like Fairy,to wash the floors or his skin would be inflamed very quickly.

I don’t envy you at all as it awful trying to find a way to help the dog and failing. He went to the vet more times than all my other dogs combined.

Has he had a proper diet trial with a hydrolysed diet and no treats for 6-8 weeks? It sounds like the immunotherapy isn’t enough to control his symptoms often they become allergic to more as time goes on - retesting is advised every 2 years or so.
If he isn’t happy and it sounds like his isn’t then either apoquel or cytopoint to control his itching (these are Itch receptor blockaders at various stages in the itch cascade) for a better quality of life!

Silly question but when you say he's allergic to things, does he actually have skin irritation, hair loss, ear infections etc. or is he exhibiting the scratching and rubbing behaviours without accompanying skin disease?
