I have found a mare who has King of Diamonds as greatgranddad and FloJo as grandma in her bloodline. As a first competiton horse am I overhorsing myself?

Bloodlines don't necessarily make the horse a winner. It is the training that usually has the greatest influence...however my new ex-racer is by Shirley Heights and Mill Reef and he's certainly one of the fastest I've ridden!!

Who knows...for every good horse in a particular bloodline there is usually a few average ones too! Equally there are some excellent horses out there with no breeding whatsoever! If you like the horse, feel that you click with it and feel that you can work together. I am a big believer in the click factor...ie when riding a horse do you click with it? that does not mean everything has to work straight away but more there is some little feeling in your gut that makes you think yes! Eg. When I first rode my mare I absolutely hated her on the flat....she went like a giraffe and gave you a great view of the whorl on her forehead as you cantered lol. i jumped one crosspole on her and that was it I was head over heels in love! I feel when trying horses you should approach it as though you are buying for someone else and you will have to really justify your reasoning as to why you think the horse is a suitable purchase! I personally find this helps me be objective and helps figure out is there something that makes you and the horse click or not!

Echo above, impossible to tell just from bloodlines. Take someone experienced who knows you well and try the horse in as many scenarios as possible, in the school, field on the roads, see it at a comp venue away from home as I know you said in earlier post you are inexperienced so you want to check there are no issues you can't handle.

If you can get a trial even better, I wouldn't offer when selling but some do.

Good luck :D

King of diamonds blood is pretty dilute now, wouldn't say it would mean anything in particular. I know of three or four horses with KoD blood and they are all totally different! Size and colour and temprament.
My young horse is well bred but very chilled, his breeding doesn't make any difference really!
Def take someone with you and see how you feel on and around the horse and take it from there!

I echo Ecrozier's sentiments that the K of D blood would be very diluted now. However, the offspring are usually very nice for a few generations, and usually put to other good quality lines. Most descendants are good irish horses who generally enjoy jumping. Quite often sensible types (not always!) so a good first competition horse perhaps... Definately worth a look...

My mare has K of D a couple of Gen back and she is super chilled, until you pick up a contact or point her at a jump! But like others have said, her KOD blood would be very dilute!
You won't know unless you go have a look :D

I had an ISH mare who was K.O.D and she did require very firm handling, but then that could just be her.

OIAM - my ex racer also has Mill Reef and Shirley Heights in her bloodline, would be interested to know the rest of your horses breeding :)

My daughter's horse is from the King of Diamonds line...... he's quirky and spooky.... also sensitive..... but we love him to death - he's also a great competition horse - Brill at Dressage and got great B.E. results so far...... we often hear King of Diamond horses are 'like this'.... !!

Seem to recall Flo Jo parading at a World Cup Qualifying show at Millstreet with I think 3 surrogate mares and her embryo transfer foals, could it be descended from one of these? I know she had no foal of her own but its a long time ago that this happened when Millstreet ran their indoor international and I think Flo Jo was jumping at the show herself.

Now that is most interesting cos it backs up some suspicions I had. I couldnt find any sign of her having foals and when this one would have been born FloJo was at the top of her game.
Still a nice horse but now there may be some bargaining room, but why lie about something so easily checked?

I shall do some digging. I'm seeing the horse again next week and will ask some pertinent questions. I'll let you know.
Still a good horse for all that lol

I know 2 horses with the same sire and same owner so same training methods - both physically and mentally they are about as far apart as you can get, bloodlines aren't everything the unknown mare can make a huge difference.

Masively diluted KOD blood there. I have a granddaughter and to he honest it depends on which KOD son it was and his son etc so I'd probably go on closer ancestry like sire/dam sire and grandparents to get an idea of temp.
Hope it works out for you though and not a wasted viewing journey!
