*cups ear* What's that noise? Ah yes, the crowd baying for a Toby update!! I joke I joke, but you're getting an update anyway.....

He's been getting ridden around 5/6 times a week and can easily do 30 minutes work without getting puffed now. Because he needs to be balanced in all 3 paces (imo) in order for me to start asking for bending, suppleness and eventually to tweak him into some sort of outline, a general session involves lots of loops and circles in all 3 paces and practicing straight lines with him and ensuring he doesn't throw his shoulders or bum about.

Along with balance I've been really trying to get him to accept my leg and my hands (not asking for an outline, but putting more pressure on and using half halts more). It must be working because he understands each up and downward transition signal. And no longer gets confused and runs his little legs off in a mad trallop (trot/gallop) or plant the brakes on thinking I want an emergency stop!! As of last Friday, I have been starting to sit for half a 20m circle in canter which; first hump of surprise aside, he has taken well  On the whole, everything is much less hurried and I no longer fear for my life when riding him!!

I am pleased to report weight loss since the first picture thread. It is difficult to see it with a saddle/me on top, because I hide the dip along his spine and his ears look like they come out of his ass!! He doesn't have an apple bottom cleft and honestly, I think he is looking a LOT more toned, seems to have lost that dimpled/rippled affect and his tummy is slightly more tucked. And well *shrugs* he must have lost weight since his girth has gone from 'just' reaching to hole one on either side to easily running up to the 4th hole on both sides :D

Whilst Tobes looks chuffed with himself after every session, he doesn't appreciate the 'perks' that come with his new job:

So what next I hear you ask? 28th August. Intro A. Vale View. HELL YEAHHHHHH. Haha!! I am so excited, just hoping the judges don't laugh as I come down the centre line otherwise I can kiss any sense of dignity goodbye :o I would just like to put the fact out there that Toby has a bright pink Katie Price rug to travel in so at least we're going to look awesome even if I end up eating arena surface.

Chicken Jalfrezi and White Wine for all who have bothered to read!

Oh. My. God. THAT, right there, must be the cutest thing ever.

EEEE, look at his little bandages, I might explode from all the cuteness.

They better not laugh all the way down the centre line, they should bloody well play a fanfare to celebrate his awesomeness. I'd give you a prize just for being there hehe.

Seriously though, I love him and he looks much better.

Stealing the limelight away from Bruce however. I hope he isn't jealous about sharing you?

Loving his matchy matchy!! Can't wait for the comp report....but i will feel incompetent if you do a prelim before me and baby pony.

Toby is such a little dude.

Wooohooo - fantastic! He is looking better already - and the grin on your face is absolutely priceless! yeeehawww!

Please please please bribe as many camera people as you can - I want video of the test and I want to see one on the judge/scribe and another on the crowd! Pleawse please please! LOL

Can't wait to hear all about it! :D

Bless him he is so so so cute :D LOVE the mini matchy! Cant wait for his dressage debut.

Ps I spied you in H&H this week when I was looking in tesco earlier

Looking much better already!

Rossi says that all the best dressage horses do a mad 'trollop', and thinks that when approached with matchy matchy and pink rugs King Toby should practice this special gait (hey, it'll get him even fitter! :p)

As someone who was once cajoled into doing a prelim test on an evil Shetland X that had recently arrived at the riding school I worked at, I wish you luck! ;) We went in vaguely the right direction and in vaguely the right gait but with quite a lot of napping towards the plant pots (yes, at one point she did attempt to take a mouthful...) and lots of farting :o
The judge (and everyone in the viewing gallery) thought it was hilarious, and my comment from the judge was 'most amusing dressage test I've ever had the pleasure of judging'!! :D

You and Toby however look a lot more professional than we did, he is so cute :D

He looks like he's taking it all very seriously!! Hope he doesn't get any 'small man syndrome' at VV;)!!

Good luck, make sure you take the Limpet (PS) with you to take some pics!!

Please can there be a video as well for Toby's debut? :D

He's looking fab and seems very happy in his work.

Niki- KP rug?? . . . I would of saved that and only put it on him if he was very very naughty ;)

My first experience of Toby. Please may I ask what his history is? (I would search but on iPhone and it's hard)
He is uber cute albeit a tad different to what I expected when I opened this thread :D

This is too funny for words. Oh dear, I've been having a glum evening but this has cheered me up no end- thanks.

I SO, SO, SO wish I lived near you. I would be STRAIGHT down to that venue, front row to watch you two. Good luck, I'm going to have to go now, I'm choking

You must do the test with a straight face of concentration. Power down that center line, eyes locked with the judge (if you're high enough!) and intimidate them!

Warm up should be undertaken in same way, bonus points if you duck under some horses bellies. Power around and refer to him in his full name at all times (bonus if it's more names than he is hands high!) Also have a small army of grooms to prune, boot etc.

And please please catch it on camera! :D

This! He looks fab

This is the best thread I've seen for ages.
I'm so impressed that you're taking him to a comp...bloody good on you!
I'm just chuckling at the thought of it. Thank you for cheering me up (& roll on the 28th :D )

What a difference in him. Can't wait to read more and follow his progress :D Good luck and that grin on your face says it all. That's what we have horses for whatever the shape and size :)

Toby's threads have actually inspired me to start driving our companion shetland in long reins. He is not overweight or anything, but I thought his life could be a bit more exciting with a bit of schooling! Sadly he is tiny, and I would be too heavy for the wee chappy, thus the long reins. Bless his wee hooves, but he is a reluctant student!

Toby looks great, but I bet you will get some strange looks in the warm up!!

I love Toby updates!!! I'm looking forward to reading about your dressage test and hopefully seeing pics. You should have done it for charity, you'd have raised heaps he's so cute!
