For any one who read my last post and is interested the horse started treatment this week. She was good at the vets and seemed much more free after the cortisone injections. She has started the muscle relaxants and seems OK although getting her to take all the tablets is proving problematic tried all the usually disguising tricks so any other suggestions are welcome. Your input about the surgery opened my eyes as I had previously thought this would be a no go area. I've discussed it at length with the Vet and Physio so if this treatment regime doesn't work I'm fairly certain I'd now give the operation a go. We are trying palliative first as obviously I'd rather avoid an anaesthetic and all the inherent complications if possible. Will let you know how we get on so thanks for the support and advice.

That sounds like a good plan. If could have tried the palliative route first we would have but Spikes reactions to the pain in his back were so extreme it was becoming dangerous. Basicaly for him it was op or PTS. Fingers crossed for you and keep us all updated.

HI, just to say good luck and hope it all works out for you and your horse, it is pretty brave to be open to the idea of surgery but the good thing is that you have it as an option if the palliative route doesn't work out. Your horse is lucky to have a good owner who is prepared to be open minded, it is a hard decision but you'll do the right thing for you and your horse. If you need any help or advice feel free to pm me as I have asked lots and lots of questions and my horse has come out the other side and is doing well, as are many others on this forum. If you decide on surgery look at Svend Kold at Willersley as this is his speciality and he does a couple of these op's a week so has had lots of practise, can't recommend him highly enough. Have all my fingers crossed for you.

Hi, just to say you're not on your own on this site; there seem to be a lot of us on here whose horses have suffered the same thing and have gone down different routes. I only had the surgery route available to me and don't regret it. My horse is now coming along in leaps and bounds. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you in which ever way you chose to go and hope that the palliative route works for you.

Keep us updated.
