Hello, I started reading up about kissing spine for a friends horse and alarm bells started to ring as I read.....my 5 year old has recently had issues with sustaining and shortening his canter. He is a compact little horse so in theory he should find it easy!! Last week while having his brand new dressage saddle fitted the saddler noticed a swelling around his wither.....so I had his back checked, he was sore and this was put down to concussion and working hard?

All of this seemed plauseable as he had been on a hunt ride in early may for the first time and in places the ground was fairly hard, plus alot of road work? He is also unhappy about the saddle going on his back???

He doesnt buck or rear but he does run through the bridle especially downward transitions and canter - shortening his stride is hard, although I have to say he has had one or two hind leg kicks when asking for canter??

Im now feeling very worried that this is more serious than him being a cheeky youngster??

Anybody shed any light:(

Could just be that hes very green and unbalanced in his work, hence you are having problems in the arena.

If you are worried though the first thing i would do would be to call the vet out and get them to check him over.

Who checked the horses back??

I pressume the concussion was due to the saddle?? This should not be happening im highly dubious about the fit of your saddle. Ive been through a terrible time recently with a poor fitting saddle & you would be amazed the amount of problems badly fitting saddle can cause.

A vet cannot 100% tell for ks without an xray. We had Dots back checked, ALOT. Took her to rear up and over, and nearly kill the rider, AND us to INSIST that she be xrayed, that they found it. TWO areas.

But be careful not to jump to conclusions xx

I have his back checked by chirs caydon parker and she is coming out again with my worries in mind but she is sure its all just typicall of young horse syndrome:)

I also have a very good reputabe saddler to fit both his saddles, it was his saddler who flagged up the swollen wither so although im always a sceptic i do think both havent let me down!!

Plus I have ridden him on fairly hard ground a few times??
