Just wondering having read all the related posts on the site, has anyone ever had the Newmarket surgeon Ian Wright do this operation ? I know he is a brilliant joint man, but had never heard in connection with KS.
Everyone on the site goes for Svend Kold, is he the best, you all seem to think so.

Does anyone have any experience of KS being operated on in Newmarket?

Thank you

I have done my research on this just 8 weeks ago. Spike is now just over 5 weeks post op and we begin our pessoa rehab next week. Of all the surgeons, vets and people on HHO I have spoken to Svend at Willersleys came out top. As far as I can see the main reason for this is due to the rehab afterwards rather than the op itself. It was well worth the 4 hour drive to Willesleys to get him operated on and we have seen major improvments in him everyday over the last 5 weeks. Any questions there are a number of people on here that have all had similar experiences that I am sure could answer your questions.

I would trust Ian Wright to do anything on my horses
My old show jumper had KS op done many years ago,a long recovery,he was off for almost 1 year all together,i do encourage people to go for the OP if its being offered to them and they got the time to wait while their horse is recovering,by doing the OP the Vet will actually Remove the bad part
BUT he came back to jump Grade C with me again and never never had a back problem ever again

I agree with going for the op but the rehab is where Svend is so different. The plan is that we will be back on our horse 12 weeks post op!!!

The difference with svend kold, is that he has a completly different way of cutting things which makes all the difference in the world. Beth H would know more about this ( my science fails me at the moment!)

Really interesting, as i don't know where to go on this.
I'm panicking as when I've researched the op the whole ' cutting' bit horrifies me. I have a really talented dressage horse and the thought of this, and if he will come back to work really worries me.
He only has one KS but it's right under my seat bones, and the inflammation from it causes his pain.

I have the time for him to recover, but I want to be sure I sure the best surgeon for the job, hence the question. Anymore view on this would be appreciated.

I would trust Svend Whole heartedly, my husband is a Vet who recommends him highly and has in the past gone to Svend's to help with ops on clients he has sent there. He is a good friend too so I know what he is capable of. We recommended one of our clients go to him for KS surgery as she has an Eventer worth £100,000+ Pippa Funnell wanted to buy him!, Svend did the surgery 2yrs ago know but he is back competing at top level. It did take longer to recover than estimated but he did have 4 vertibrae chiseled. There is a risk with all surgery and some horses don't come back at the level they are capable of prior to the surgery but if it is that bad then you have to give it ago regardless of what potential he may have. My dressage horse was diagnosed with KS 6yrs ago, just under the saddle, I opted not to have the surgery as it never really troubled him too much, always cold backed when you 1st get on and hard to get him on the bit at first but once you've convinced him it is more comfortable to work him deep he's fine. Now 14yrs old and working at Advanced Medium, I sometimes wish I had gone for the surgery but with him I don't think it would have made much difference to his comfort, just to his roundness and that is all down to me.

I read a paper recently about keyhole surgery that is being pioneered for this and is therefore much less invasive . Unfortunately I can't find the link now, but I think it was at Liverpool

This whole operation is very scary I know, but I wouldnt worry as many of us have had it done now with good results. Mine had 3 vertebrate removed 2 years ago, he has just won his first elementary dressage and qualified for the Novice championships, he's basically won nearly every dressage test that he has ever done since his surgery. I would definately trust Svend with the most valuable of horses!! He has operated on so, so many international competition horses., every time I go to Willesley, I always see a 'star' rider or owner there.

My horse had put on weight and had regained his sparkle in his eye just two days after his surgery, just like that, he got his old charisma back that had long gone after all his years of pain.

Thank you for your advice on this, I think i will ask Svend to look at my x rays.
I think my only option on this is surgery, I've tried the injections but I think it made it worse.
The horse only has one KS so not much in theory to do, but this small impingement creates a big area of inflamation which stops him working deep and round, especially at it's exactly where all my weight is.
Your replies telling me that your horses have continued to compete successfully give me great hope. My horse is just six and not only talented but the kindest soul ever, and i desperately want to take away the back pain he feels.

Thank you all for your encouragement.
