Just to give you hope, a friend of mine bought a horse which turned out to have this and after a lot of physio and lungeing they have got him right, but it probably depends on the severity of it.

my ex race horse had a kissing spine.

She had the operation and was cured.
I was left with a very large vets bill though.
The insurance company wouldnt pay out as treatment had been going on for more than 12 months.
She had rest, steroid injections and other treatment before the vet decided it was best to operate.

Hi,

Glad your horse made a recovery!

How much was everyting incuding the op?

Mine is insured and I'm going straight for Xrays of the spine tomorro which will start the insurance and there is a £5k limit, hopefully, if he has it, he can go straight to surgery..

What were your horses symptoms and Y did you suspect KS?

My mare had the op and has recovered successfully, i had a fight with the insurance but they covered it all in the end, she also had an infection and allergic reaction to the antibiotics and a course of physio and this was all covered with the 5k limit...she also had to stay in hospital a few days longer as she had colic!

hmmmm so dont fret

I'm afraid my boy's with NFU and the invvestigation has cost £1800 so far, and with the £3.5k for the op/physio and half of hospital livery, we're going to be left out of pocket.

I suspected KS because he would not canter, back sore to touch, when he did canter he was clearly in pain, and when he jumped he was too sore to ride afterwards. The Horse and Hound article on Kissing spine sums up my boy's symptoms perfectly.

Vet came out, referred to osteopath who said nothing wrong skeletally

and to 'get rid if it doesn't go away - you don't want a horse with a back problem'... Needless to say I went on the advice of him and the vet, untill after 4 weeks, I decided enough was enough and I wanted him referred to Liphook for investigation. As soon as he arrived, the consultant said "Clear case of kissing spines" from looking at the outside.

Never using this osteopath again - waste of time and money. Old one was fabby, this is his business partner and spends 5 minutes and charges £60.

My boy is having his op in October.
