Took my 10year old horse to the vets at the weekend and on Mon they did an xray of his spine and found out that he has kissing spine in 3 vertebrae behind the saddle. I was going to have the operation done but I have now decided to give him a year off in the field and bring him in at the end of next summer and have him re x-rayed. just wondering if anyone else has had any experiences and if you can let me know :)

There are loads of posts about this in the vet section which you might find helpful. A friend at my yard had this done but actually had a pretty lengthy rehabilitation programme to go through and could not turn her boy away. Did your vet say he could have the op and then rest?

My horse was diagnosed with KS when with a previous owner. He was operated on. And I'm now dealing with the consequences - arthritis in the operation site less than 2 years later.

I call the surgery butchery.

Look into Marijke de Jong's Straightness Training Program - it's a series of groundwork exercises that will open the spinal processes and build the muscles around them to keep them open. It will work, and not do any damage in the meantime.

Good luck!

We have a mare with kissing spine, every other vertebrae is kissing. Wod never have the op as already said it is butchery. Instead she has been treated by Donna blinman using osteopAthy, acupuncture and other things and will always have to b worked in a correct outline to strengthen the back. Any questions just pm me.
