Kissing spines, now uveitis, can I have a break please?

My horse had surgery for kissing spines 4 months ago, we went through the long rehab process (8 weeks walking, 8 weeks lunging) over the summer; got the go-ahead to start riding again in September and had managed a whole week of riding when he developed a sore & swollen eye which has been diagnosed as uveitis. So he has been in for the last two weeks, thought he was getting better and could be turned out in the next few days (had even dared think about riding again in the near future!) but today his eye has flared up again and he is very sore and miserable.
All I can say is Aaaargghh!

I'm worried about what all this box rest is doing to his muscles; his stifles have a tendency to lock up in the winter and he has started having problems with them over the last few days. Never mind what might be happening with his back muscles. What do other people do with horses with uveitis? Can you exercise them at all in a fly mask? (e.g. on a walker)
Any ideas would be welcome.

I fashioned a flymask so that it had a sponge patch covering the side of his bad eye - that way it was dark but he could still be turned out. I know JoC got some blinkers for her horse I am sure she wouldn't mind if you sent her a PM

One of my horses has just had her eye removed due to persistant Uvietus.

What medication have the vets given you? Pred Forte?

The best thing you could do for your horse is buy a UV Mask, that way you can turn him out without having to worry about the eye itself.

Really sorry to hear that your going through this and i hope your vets can sort the eye out.

Thank you everyone, I am going to try to get one of the fly masks - if I get something like that vet says he can be walked out in the dark. He is kept in a barn so it isn't really dark enough for him, though I am trying to find a stable to move him into.
He is on Maxitrol eye drops at the moment.
Poor Brooklyn has been having a rotten time these last few months.

Holly - thanks, I haven't even got through the KS properly yet! - don't know if it had worked. Vet & physio had told me that what he needed now was to be ridden forward & build up his muscles.

Thistle - thanks, I have ordered one of these now!

Caz - have pm'd you.

THinking of his back (others much better on the eye issue). Have you tried a McTimony practioner? We have one (Emma Punt) and I have to say she's made a major difference to my horses, especially the one with the suspensory ligament problem.

I don't know the protocol here, but if you want her number let me know - if she isn't close enough to you she knoes of others.

Hope thngs improve all round soon.
