what are the possible symptoms of KS? i know that manic bronking everytime someone gets on is one but thats about all i know...what other things would you look out for?
There are many types of KS, we had a horse on our yard that was absolutely fine in all gaits but if you happened to canter him in a 15m circle he woud rear, spin and buck you off, he would also do this if you happened to walk him on very uneven ground, like if you let him walk half in a rut and half out. He was never nasty and once he had done his little show and the owner had fallen off, he just stood there let you get back on as though nothing had happened. I had a Hanovarian mare many years ago who jumped right up to Grade B with the lady I sold her too and she was at a qualifer somewhere and there was a vet there who pulled her over and diagnosed KS just by watching her warming up, horse was then sent to the vets and had the operation and was still out competing right up until her early 20's. Would suggest you get a very competent vet who is good with KS to come and assess the horse as it can be very hard to diagnose and can be mistaken for other more simple problems.
Kissing Spines
Horses show signs of poor performance, reluctance to jump, unpredictable behaviour when being ridden and sometimes extreme stiffness.
Other symptoms or signs of equine kissing spines are irritability when the girth is tightened or when the horse's back is brushed during grooming, rearing, bucking or bolting.
My experience was a slight shooting off when asking for canter and then the fitter she got the more she wouldn't, bizarrely, stay in the field. She would panic when I let her go, gallop wildly around the field and over the nearest gate, fence, whathaveyou. I only had her a couple of months though so I didn't know her history with her field manners.
My friends horse was competing absolutely fine but the odd stop here and there and bucking when asking for canter, nothing extreme at all just lost of performance.
wow thanks guys. only experience i've had with KS was an extreme reaction from the horse and didn't actually realise that it could manifest itself in such subtle ways
when vets are looking for something like this would they need to do xrays or scans or something or can it be detected more easily?
Had the op and made a full recovery. He moved better than when I bought him.His jumping came on really well and he stopped rushing to et over.It was at this point I realised I was now overhorsed and so I sold him on. He changed from a quiet irish sports horse into big flashy irish sports horse who was to strong for me !
ditto digger123. Had op and went great, new horse but full of go now!! Highly recommend, I tried everything and should have went for surgery earlier but was a big decision risk wise.
My horse started kicking out when I asked for canter strike off on a left handed circle. He was fine to tack up and get on but he did became very explosive when he got tense. He gradually got worse in his training and became nappy but was absolutely fine to hack.
He had the op to remove 4 processes on 30th June and we are in the middle of the lunging part of the rehab. I think the op was successful and he is showing some good work in between the odd explosive moment. Looking forward rather apprehensively about getting back on after the comments on here of having a horse full of go afterwards. He was full of go before!
My mare was very subtle never ever dangerous... had a sore back and i gave her time off...she lost muscle...wasnt tracking up, she could no longer collect her canter etc....poor little horsey!
She is now VERY comfortable and not a stressy weaving machine! Very glad I did the surgery
My boy ended up fracturing my spine through bucking me off and I was told by professionals there was nothing wrong with him!
I pursued my belief that there was something very wrong and he had the op, its been a hell of a long trip with him and he can still be a tad unpredictable but he must have been in a huge amount of pain.
I did start to teach him to jump and although he clearly loved it, it really made him sore so he's back to being a dressage diva.
I've learnt to read his signs ie when he swishes his tail angrily he hurts!!
