Kitting out a new horse with rugs - what do I need?

Hi all,

I've just got a horse for the first time in 8 years. She came with a lightweight turnout and a medium weight stable rug. I'm just thinking of kitting her out with Premier Equine rugs with the 25% off discount code :)

Question is what will I need? She's a 16hh Hannovarian, she'll be in at night and out during the day all year pretty much. I'll probably fully clip her out during the winter.

I've bought a PE med weight turnout and it fits nicely (and is red and shiny which I like!) shall I get the Trio turnout rug, stable rug and fleece? Or am I better just getting a heavy weight turnout? Will that be enough or will I need spares?

So much choice and I'm confused with all the exciting shopping options!!

i would say definately get atleast one fleece/waffle weave rug, as if she sweats you can use it but also fab for layering. i personally dont see the point spending money on stable rugs these days it is easier to buy good quality TO's and leave them on in stable aswell. the trio looks really nice i want one as it offers different layrs but u have a med already so would just buy a heavyweight personally. You have a stable rug to add layers if she is cold. That would be my necessities list then if i grab a bargain throughout the year then i would. Thats all ym ex racer has at present and he survived winter last year like that. Also he has a duvet for this winter as being clipped!!
 
It is all down to personal choice really

I presume you want stable rugs? lots of people leave outdoor rugs on, especially PE ones. I don't

All depends on what you can afford too

In an ideal world I like having

a light weight
100g rug I find these are better than light weight as a light weight is like wearing a kagool when it gets wet its cold!!

200g full neck

Then either another 200g and an under rug (so you also have a spare) or

heavy weight (or both)

Fleece/cooler

light weight stable or use fleece (fleece gets covered in bedding)

MW or use under rug (if you get one with surcingles)

HW stable

I use all my turnouts in the stable.

Both of them have

a fleece (useful for layers under all of the following)
a no fill rug
a medium weight turnout ( mine are about 220g fill)
a couple of heavy weight turnouts (as it rains more in winter and these are the ones that usually get totally soaked)

That is pretty much it. I'm mean and they're hooligans and trash things so they don't get loads of nice stuff. I can layer up if I want to. I have a great piccy of my old mare wearing a heavy weight full neck with her heavy weight standard neck over the top but that is only for extreme weather. Last year a heavy weight plus a fleece was enough for BH who was fully clipped.
 
I do have a stable rug but only because he came with it, and it is nice and dry to change into.

However most important to me are
A medium weight and a couple of hw just so I can change when one is soggy and needs to dry out.
 
Personally, I'm not a fan of keeping the T/O rugs on in the stable, just because I'm not keen on the idea of them being left on wet, I would prefer them to be hung up to dry just because I think it'd be more comfortable, feel free to call me soft :D It also gives another opportunity to check under the rug for rubs etc, I think.
So, obviously it depends on clipping, and also the horse in general as some don't need great rugs on, but this is what I'd have;

Stable sheet - useful for keeping the beast clean before a show (mine's a grey :rolleyes:)
Medium weight stable
Heavy weight stable
Fleece and/or cooler

Rain sheet
Medium T/O
Heavy T/O (or you can layer your medium stable under your medium T/O

Then again, I am a rug junky :p I like to have heavy weights ready just in case it gets really really cold. It does completely depend on the horse though, if they're hairier and unclipped and keep their weight on well, a heavy weight probably wouldn't be necessary. Happy rug shopping :p xx
