Well I guess most people are aware that Kiwi Squeaky is over here now, and settling in at my old livery yard. She is in at night and out during the day, and her her group is changing daily but that will soon stop as all the mares are introduced to her.

She just looks a bit poor and dull TBH, and I KNOW she has gone through a big deal to get here, but unfortunately the GCT and WEG is showing me that horses can be jetsetters and compete at the highest levels and Teak would probably be beaten by a seaside donkey at this point!!!

Admittedly she was on very very light work prior to her departure and it was winter there, so god knows what she thinks of the change.
She was on ad lib hay, S beet, linseed and lots of minerals and magnesium there. Here she has stopped eating the hay so I am trying to mix it with bagged haylage, S beet and linseed. She was on hi fi cubes, running her through a bag of show pencils but next week I will start her on releve by Saracen (Im not keen on her on mixes, molasses etc but this is low starch) I also brought over a bag of her Kiwi minerals, and she is on magnesium and pro hoof I believe. Or balance, I'm not sure as its quite dark in my feed room!

Mum (her new owner!) has just come back in the house with some Guinness for her pony wub.gif laugh.gif and I am thinking about Protexin or a B12 supp?
She looks tiny, and feels underpowered.
I am still waiting for my passport from NZ as want to do vaccs and possibly run bloods/get a vet type of opinion or plan, she is also still barefoot behind and this may be affecting the power she can produce/ her stance. (but can't go anywhere without this!!!)

I am keeping her well- she has been rugged accordingly since she got here as she is struggling with the changes and often is chilly.

Thoughts? Ideas? I know that she is a horse that needs good work to thrive too, and that I have to be patient. I turned her away for 2 weeks last year and it did take a concerted effort to bring her back into non feral work!!

Ulcers? Jae looked like cr@p after a while of being here and only a course of ulcer meds Omperazole picked him up again. It's the change of time zones, weather, differentviruses in the air, different hay, management everything. I got Jaes bloods done as well as I was worried and they didn't show anything.
It will take a little while for her to settle. Lots of TLC require and a decent as hell digestive supplement.

Welcome to the UK Kiwi Squeaky!

When did she arrive? Long distance travelling really does take it out of them. Mine has only done travelling (several years ago admittedly) within the UK but it did include ferry crossings and overnight stops en-route etc. Each time, it did take him longer than I had expected to settle down and look at his best again - perhaps because he wasn't travelling long distances very often, so was never fully accustomed to it - unlike the competition horses you've been seeing at WEG.

The last time he travelled a long distance, he ended up with a respiratory infection so needed a course of Ventipulmin. Interestingly, he just appeared a bit lack lustre and subdued, with dull/starey coat for a week or so before the cough actually started, but I'm pretty sure he picked it up on the journey (which was a shared load).

It maybe worth speaking to your vet to see what they recommend / get bloods done - otherwise, I guess carry on doing what you're doing with lots of TLC and warmth and keep a close eye out for a runny nose or cough.

Good luck - I'm sure she'll settle soon!

Aww, poor squeaky Teak!! All of the above sounds good, especially the ulcer idea as she's an ex-racer and they are prone to them.

For feed, have you considered copra? It's low starch so won't affect her feet but good for condition.

How long has she been in the UK?
Have you checked her temperature? If her temp is up at all please get a vet to check her over, incase she has travel sickness.
Ulcers is a def' possibility, the stress of the journey could set them off.
If she is physically well she probably just needs a little while to get used to the hay/feed etc.
Kx

EtA that she has been in the UK for a few weeks now, so won't be travel sickness.
Hopefully she will pick up soon.
Kx
