hi

Me and my mum just bought a second horse (16.2hh thoroughbred) for me to showjump/event and the people we bought him from rode him in an 18mm KK ultra snaffle.

They said he would be fine in a loose ring french link, so we bought him one of those (as KK's are REALLY expensive) but he went horribly in it and wouldn't soften, threw his head about and was clearly NOT happy...so we contacted the previous owners who then said to us that they bought him in a happy mouth...so we tried him in that, there was little imrpovement.

Can anyone tell me more about these KK bits?? Should we just spend the 90 odd quid on a KK ultra snaffle...or is there something similar and cheaper??

thanks xxx (sorry this was a long one! haha)

I really like them and they are often on ebay at a good price. Is it possible that he is just being resistant while he finds his feet with you and the bit isn't the real issue? Neue Scheul (?sp) do kk style bits for cheaper but if I were you I'd try for the real thing as the workmanship of the NS isn't as good as the kk, IMO, and some horses don't like the salox mouthpiece.

KK bits are very good, and the cheapest place by far is here. Great service and very quick delivery.

Neue schule make a similar one called a tranz link. It's a bit cheaper, but the sprenger is much better quality so I think worth the extra money. The neue schule metal seems to dent more easily (teeth marks) and I have heard of one breaking. I have used both myself.

Other option would be a lozenge and there are plenty makers of these. The KK is differerent though as the lozenge is rotated forward by 45 degrees so it sits differently on the tongue. Have a look at the link I posted as there is heaps of info on there. If you get one, buy the diamond cleaning paste as well as it brings them up like new. The aurigan metal is lovely and shiny when new but gets dull with use. The paste brings the shine back!!

the kks are very good. was it loose ring, peanut lozenge in the middle? if that's the sort of thing you're looking for, i have two spare, 5.5", if you wanted to try one with a view to buying it, as i've got a few very similar. pm me if interested. one is loose ring, the other is loose ring but with eggbut-type arrow-shaped joints at the ends of the mouthpiece, so cannot pinch.

thanks for everyone's replys...i think it is worth the extra money then if the cheaper ones aren;t as good. we will order one asap. thanks!

and ''kerrilli'' thanks for the offer! but he isn't 5.5inch bit size, but thanks anyway! =) xx

Bought a KK ultra to replace a French link but there was no noticeable difference, i was a bit miffed after spending all that money! My horse has a very dry mouth so thought the aurigan mouth piece and lozenge might help but he went excatly the same as in the French link, typical
