My neighbour has a 3yo pony for sale by her knabstrupper stallion and out of a thoroughbred mare. Does anyone know much about knabstruppers? Temperament? Trainability? Possible conformational issues that I should look out for? What sort of price would such a youngster be going for?

The ones I have known have been very docile temperament wise very much big puppy dog personalities.
They can be a little sparse in the main/tail area but not always.
Not sure if it is just the ones that I have known but conformation wise check out the hind legs.
I've never owned one myself but the knabbie I rode was very willing and tried it's hardest despite being very very green.

We have one and I would agree with all that said above. Ours is very sparse in both mane and tail!! He has the most wonderful temperement and tries really hard to please. I would have another tomorrow!

Ask me anything you want about Knabstruppers!!!!

I am grading co-ordinator for the Knabstrupper Society GB, and my mum and dad live in Malton, so if your horse is local, I might even know it!

As previously said, they are super personalities - very intelligent and trainable.

Horses with 'rat tails' are not allowed in the main stud book of the KNN now, so they are gradually being selected out. You sometimes see sparse tails on younsgters (2-4yo) as they change from a dark tail to a white one, when they colour out and gain more spots... often people over look those horses, and then see them years later with full white tails ;-)

Can't say enough good things about them really.....

The stallion is not registered as far as I'm aware. However he is absolutely gorgeous and has a lovely temperament. Certainly didn't seem to have a "rat tail". He is just outside Malton and sometimes competes at the club field as well as a bit further afield such as Port Royal.

Young mare is very sweet and friendly. I don't think the owner is in a hurry to sell, and I'm not in a hurry to buy, so we'll just see what happens. Might just see if I can help with the ground work and backing, and take it from there :)
