What sort/make would you recommend.

Would only ever buy leather ones and if its for anything but jumping make sure you get the ones with the bottom strap. Jeffries do a lovely set of knee boots:

I'd only recommend leather ones, wether they be skeleton boots or blanket backed. They should also have bottom straps to stop the boot riding up should the horse stumble.

I don't believe that neoprene are strong enough.

Westropp are best. Easy to put on and don't flap about and don't slip down.

I have the Jefferies leather ones!! I would def recommend them as they stay in place and offer superb protection too!!
