Does anyone ride in a knee brace? I am waiting for a cruciate ligament repair and have not ridden for 6 months due to an accident

My anterior cruciate ligament has been removed and my knee keeps hyper extending

Ouch.....

If anyone uses a brace for riding or knows of someone, can you tell me what type they use?? Need to ride..................

You would be much better going to see a sports injury therapist & getting it taped plus they will show ou how to do it.

My friend has just had that op on New Years eve & it went well so fingers crossed for you

I dislocated my knee just before xmas 06 and as a result have a tear in my cartiledge, When i initially did it i was given a donjoy irom ( i think?) brace that is a thigh to ankle brace which is hinged and can be locked to prevent hyper extension. To start with it was used as an immobiliser then after 4 weeks it was changed so i had some movement but couldnt extend or bend to far, as soon as that happened i started riding in it, Had to wear it for a total of 3 months and was out competing by about week 8 as it takes all the pressure off my knee.
Doctors have been debating on and off about whether i need an op but while it doesnt cause me to much grief i keep putting it off, i now have a breg brace that i dont really use to ride in ( although i have and it is possible ) i use it when we go snowboarding and if i go running.
My injury wasnt as serious as yours but i found the donjoy brace fantastic have got it laying about somewhere if you want me to try and dig it out you could try it and see how you get on??

Cheers, worth a try. My physio suggested the brace while I'm waiting for the op as its been sooooo long since I've ridden, glad your friends op went ok, makes me feel better

Thank you Silverskye thats really kind of you, I was thinking of something less bulky tho, the type that is hinged at the knee and only invloves the knee. I'm ok riding, its the getting off thats the problem, steps and all.......its a pain in the a*$e

Do you have a physio? Ask him/her or you specialist about a BioSkin brace - my girlfriend got one recently after dislocating her knee and her physio feels it will be suitable to ride in. It's apparently a fairly new design to the UK (Canadian made apparently, although that has nothing to do with my suggestion

) and my friend's surgeon hadn't even seen one before her physio recommended it so you might have to suggest it yourself. It's soft and "low profile" but has an adjustable firm "tracking piece" that supports and directs the knee cap. I don't know if it would work for your situation but perhaps it's worth looking into.

Looking at the website it looks like the one I'm talking about wouldn't work for you but they do have some that might. Well made, sport oriented brace so still, I would think, worth a look.

thank you all for your messages, its been a great help, will have a look at all the sites and have a chat with my physio to see which is the best, its purely for dismounting, I'm fine in the saddle......stupid ah

Not much help now but for future! I have had a cruciate repair my advice is do not get back on a horse too early I had a terrible time after mine as pushed it far too quickly. I did mine throught rugby but thought on a horse I would be fine! Also do your physio I was good about the exercises but lazy about the weights and I think the weights sessions in the gym improve you more than anything.

I am in a similar position - have just had an operation to recontruct my anterior and medial cruciate ligaments and so am wearing a brace and am waiting to get back riding at the moment too.

Anyway, my brace is a Donjoy TROM Advance Cool (I think) and I think I probably could ride in it if I wouldn't be skinned alive by concerned parents.

It does basically the same as the once SilverSkye described but the adjustable dials move around when they're not supposed to, which means my leg can get set at all sorts of funny angles, so if I was buying a brace I don't think I would get this one, however since I didn't pay for it I can't really complain

I rode in a hinged knee brace at physio's advise after dislocating my knee falling off ~(note - don't try and land on feet again!)
I used it for arount 10 weeks until I's managed to build the muscle up sufficiently above my knee.

It was my left knee I did and I (probably stupidly) rode after 8 days but only walk and canter (even sitting trot was painful) but after a few weeks it eased off and I've been fine since.

I rode BD with the brace on with a doctors letter too.

Think it was about £50 but definitely worth them money

i did my cruciate falling off (landed standing up, snap Miller!), and had it operated on. i wore a very thick neoprene support (with cut-out for kneecap, so no pressure on front) for my first few events after the op, i still have it and can send it for you to try if you want. it's very firm, might give you enough support. i found that was enough, but was prepared to get a proper hinged brace if necessary.
i think Tina Gifford rode in one for a while, you could always ask BE for her number and ask her about it.
i'm sure you've already tried this, but if it's only getting off that's the problem, take horse back to (high) mounting block, get someone to hold horse, maybe dismount side-saddle style (right leg over front, slide down facing away from horse). just an idea.
